Love's Sorrow

Love's Sorrow

The second piece I created for Sparks is based on a novel excerpt from Lisa Lipkind Leibow. The piece I created has a feeling of foreboding that mimics the story. Certain elements in the piece I originally planned on using did not make it into the final cut. But I feel this piece reflects the story quite well.

To read the short story excerpt that inspired the piece, read below:

Endeavour

Endeavour

From the recent edition of Sparks, I have created my newest piece "Endeavour". The story that inspired it is below. I took a few artistic liabilities with the piece, and used the overall feel of the story for illustrating the story as opposed to creating a direct representation. Enjoy!

artdc Gallery is Accepting Proposals

We are pleased to consider artists and show submissions by Washington, DC area artists that live between Fredrick, MD area to Richmond, VA. We represent many styles and types of media with a particular interest in Sculpture, 2-d, 3-d, mixed media, and kinetic art. Prepare a .zip file with your resume, CV with show experience, 10 images at least 2000 pixels at the largest dimension for each, and drop us a note here and we’ll send you instructions on where to send the .zip file.

For exhibition or lecture ideas, we require a well thought out proposal with a few paragraphs about the idea, how you would use the space, sample images of the works you’d like to include, and artists you’d like to work with. Images of ideas and proposed works. We want to know the idea is real and feasible. We need more than, “I want to do a show about X.” We need lists, thoughts, and a plan. Paint a mental picture of what you’re imagining.

It’s not possible to accept all work or ideas, but we are very excited to hear from you.

The Power of Ideas Feature!

The Spanish site El Poder de las Ideas featured me on their website! This is what they had to say:

Which basically means something along the lines of:
There can be many interpretations to art. It is infinitive as everyone has their own perspectives, theories and ideas on what they observe. From this, Russ captures your attention with every new creation created that is filled with surrealism.

Time, dreams, the paranormal, the human psyche, the universe, alternate dimensions, mythological creatures (fairies), all themes that can be found in McIntosh's works made of great realism and visual contrast of which invites the observer to reflect and generate all kinds of questions and perhaps answers.

élan Magazine

I just found out about a magazine that showcases Northern Virginia artists. I plan to sen them a press kit, and hope they will feature me in an upcoming issue.

Artists’ guidelines for magazine

Submission of Portfolio
Any individual active in the fine arts or performing arts and who also lives, works, exhibits or performs in the Northern Virginia area is encouraged to send a press kit, portfolio or web site information to Art Director Jean Davis at 1144F Walker Road, Great Falls, VA 22066. Please note that submission of a portfolio does not guarantee that an article will be published in élan. You will be advised of our decision in a timely manner. An artist who is approved for a profile will be contacted by a writer who will schedule an interview.

Graphics
At least a month prior to date of publication, the artist should provide high resolution digital images of artwork or performances. If this is not possible, we will need high-quality photos, slides, or transparencies. (Artwork on websites is generally of insufficient resolution.) In addition, we will need a candid or formal head shot of the artist. If none is provided, the writer may take a photo at the time of the interview or the artist may come in to the élan office to be photographed. Artwork and photos may be delivered or mailed to the office, delivered to the writer during the interview, e-mailed to Art Director Jean Davis, or uploaded to our ftp site. Please e-mail Jean to get FTP instructions.

Format of Photos
We prefer digital images, but will accept a variety of formats in either color or black-and-white: good quality prints, slides, or transparencies. (NOTE: digital images should be 300 dpi in resolution, in either jpeg or tiff format, and approximately 7 in. wide or larger.) Each image should include an identifying caption. For artwork, include the full title, medium (e.g., acrylic on wood or multimedia) and size of the original piece. For abstract images, the artist should clearly identify the correct orientation.

Return of Photos to Artist
The artist is responsible for retrieving all materials submitted for use in the article. If an artist includes a self-addressed stamped envelope with photos, slides, disks, etc., the materials will be returned following publication of the article. The artist may also make arrangements to pick up materials from the élan office.

Upon acceptance for publication, the artist should complete the interactive pdf questionnaire and release form in order to provide contact information and a brief artist’s statement of approximately 50 words. The form requires a signature granting élan permission to publish the resulting article as well as the artist’s photo and artwork.

Copies of Published Articles
élan magazine will provide six free copies of élan for the artist upon publication of the profile. The artist may purchase additional copies at $3 each. Copies must be picked up at the Great Falls office during business hours or by arrangement.

Inclusion on Our Website
During the month of publication, your article will be posted under Current Issue on our website. If you would like information about selling your art commission-free on our new website, www.elanfineart.com, please contact Mike Gallagher at mike@elanmagazine.com or 703-757-7522 ext. 4#.

For further information, contact Art Director Jean Davis at jean@elanmagazine.com or 703-757-7522 ext. 2#.
