Spectrum Call For Entries

This is an invitation to all professional and student artists, art directors, publishers, and artist representatives to submit entries to the 19th Annual Spectrum International Competition for Fantastic Art. All art works in all mediums embracing the themes of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and the surreal are eligible for this show. Fantastic Art can be subtle or obvious, traditional or off-the-wall, painted, sculpted, or photographed: there is no unacceptable way to create art and there are no set rules that say one piece qualifies while another doesn’t. Imagination and skill are what matters. Work chosen by the jury will be printed in full color in the Spectrum Annual, the only peer-selected “best of the year” collection for the fantastic arts.

Eligibility
Any published or unpublished art may be submitted in the appropriate category. Work must have been finished or first published between January 1, 2011 and January 1, 2012.

Deadline For Entries
Entries must be delivered, prepaid, with all appropriate forms and entry fees to Spectrum, 11520 Flint St., Overland Park, KS 66210 U.S.A. 913-538-1142 [for Express Mail, UPS, Federal Express, etc.—please check the “No Signature Required” option] no later than January 27, 2012. The judging will take place shortly after the deadline.

Notification For Accepted Work
Only entrants whose works are selected by the jury for inclusion in the annual will be notified by mail in April, 2012 with additional information regarding what we’ll need for the book. A list of of accepted entrants will also be posted on the Spectrum website: www.spectrumfantasticart.com Please check to see if your name is on the list before contacting us to ask if you made it. We will not otherwise be notifying entrants that did not have work selected: only artists with work selected by the jury for inclusion in the annual will have their names listed on the website and will be notified by mail.

The Fellowship Program was established in 1940 through a generous contribution made by the late John Lee Pratt of Fredericksburg. Warwick McClintic Jr. Scholarship Fund.

Beginning at Midnight in Reading you can view Amore Adumbration, Elements, JesusHell, and Pandora. To view the times my artwork will be displayed, you can refer to this Handy Time Schedule. My work will be displayed roughly ten times throughout the day.

Also beginning at Midnight in New Orleans you can see Angelic Composition, Divine Vision, Knock On The Sky, and Sisyphean Tableaux. Saturdays and Sundays my pieces will be interspersed throughout the day with other artists, but Monday through Friday during the week of November 7-11 my art will be shown with only a select few artists.

The Billboard Art Project is taking over roadside digital LED billboards to turn them into free public art venues for 24 hours or more.

Those in-your-face and colorful canvases that you see as you sit stuck in traffic are turned over to local and international artists for a little break from everyday advertising, presenting larger-than-life art in glowing colors.

Catch a glimpse from your car as you drive by, or hang out for awhile and watch the show with other artists and onlookers.

You won't know what is coming next as different artists explore this medium, with the electronic canvas morphing every 6-10 seconds.

Postcards From the Edge is a Visual AIDS benefit show and sale of original, postcard-sized artworks by established and emerging artists. All artwork is exhibited anonymously. With the playing field leveled, all participants can take home a piece by a famous artist, or someone who is just making their debut. Nonetheless, collectors walk away with a piece of art they love, knowing that the money raised will support HIV prevention and AIDS awareness.

Visual AIDS invites artists to donate a 4" x 6" original work on paper for our Postcards From the Edge exhibition and benefit sale. Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and mixed media are all welcome. Artists must be 18 years or older to participate. One entry per artist.

Deadcandance

**UPDATE: The series won First Place at the recent
"Dying to Get In" juried exhibiton.

This series was created for a Halloween exhibition, focusing on graveyard's. The interesting take I used with this series is that the three images can be arranged in several different ways as they each interconnect with one another. The pieces work on their own, paired, or as the complete set.

INDIVIDUAL PIECES
Somnus

Solace

Serenity

Each individual piece is available as a Premium Edition 11" x 14" print, signed and numbered. There is a limited quantity of 25 each at only $25.00

ALL THREE PIECES COMBINED

Deadcandance

You can purchase this Premium Edition print of the complete set as a 12" x 26" lithograph. There is a limited quantity, as there will only be 5 of these complete set prints created. Available for just $40.00.

The series is installed in the "Dying To Get In" Exhibition in Springfield Mall. It has already been awarded first place by the judges.

If you would like the entire series in a canvas wrap. You can purchase the set for just $600.00, each piece measures 16" x 20".

Get Sparked! Reception

Get Sparked! Reception

My recent artwork "revelation" will be on view at the Del Ray Artisans gallery beginning this Friday, October 7th. Come out to the reception and view all the other works also on display.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 7th
7-10 pm
Enjoy refreshments and meet the artists!

Join Del Ray Artisans and SPARK: art from writing/writing from art as we embark on an artistic journey that pushes boundaries. This show is a first for Del Ray Artisans: seventy-two artists signed up to respond to poems and prose by seven SPARK writers. Each artist received one written piece (their creative “spark”) and then had approximately two months to create new work using the assigned story or poem as a jumping off point.

“There’s nothing like a deadline to get the creative fires burning,” said Amy Souza, show co-curator and SPARK founder. “Plus the story or poem gives you an immediate starting point, something to ponder and delve into for images and ideas. In essence, the written work becomes the artist’s muse.”

Co-curator Amanda Wright is running a Get Sparked! round for students at Greenbriar East Elementary. Students will be given a story or a poem to be inspired to create a new piece of art. “It’s such a fantastic opportunity and experience for children to share their creativity and imagination with others and to see their work in a gallery setting!” said Wright.

Opening Reception: Friday, October 7 from 7pm-10pm. Experience a unique showcase of writing as inspiration, and artistic interpretations. Light snacks and beverages will be available.

Reading: Friday, October 14 from 7pm-9pm. SPARK writers share aloud the inspiration pieces that prompted the current gallery show’s art. Light snacks and refreshments. Donations accepted.

Student Reception: Friday, October 21 from 7pm-9pm. Greenbriar East Elementary students showcase artwork inspired by selected poets and writers. Kid-friendly opening, light refreshments, an art project to take home!

View the Show: October 7-30, 2011 during gallery hours at the Del Ray Artisans gallery at the Nicholas A. Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are: Thursdays, 12 noon to 6 pm; Fridays, 12 noon to 9 pm; Saturdays, 10 am to 9 pm; and Sundays, 12 noon to 6 pm. The gallery is free, open to the public and handicap accessible.
