I just finished designing my own personal Artomatic postcards. I included some quick notes about me and a map of how to locate my artwork. I also tried keeping with some of the graphics on the official Artomatic cards, for consistency sake. I should be getting proofs in a little bit and a batch printed up later this afternoon!

ArtDC Patron Show - Call for Entries, Become a Patron!



After three years, we’ve brought the art of the Washington, DC area artists into the eyes of the public at the artdc Gallery in Hyattsville, MD.  We’ve hosted over 40 art shows with a positive following.  We could not have done it with out you.  It is now time to thank those who support us.  We are inviting all of our patron supporters to hang their work in the artdc Gallery.

The Install is May 20th, 2012
The Reception is June 2nd, 2012
The De-install is June 24th , 2012

We will include at least one work of each patron of artdc.org (space permitting).  Works of art should be professionally presented with a wire in back, and limited roughly to 36 x 48 inches.  The art will be hung Salon Style. Sculpture and small installation works are welcomed.

Artists must submit 3 to 5 images to artdc at fineartventures@gmail.com.  artdc will Jury the show.  Submit your images as soon as possible with a deadline May 18th.

artdc will promote the show through facebook, our mailing lists, and a press release with all artist names.

The artdc Gallery is located in the burgeoning Arts District of Hyattsville, MD, just outside the District of Columbia. Our light-filled space in the storefront of the Lustine Center, a striking, re-imagined 50's car dealership, anchors this lively street of shops, restaurants, independent businesses, and artist studios. 2. Send up to five jpeg images of your work to fineartventures@gmail.com . Make sure the jpegs are 2000 x 2000 px or less and the file names include your name. The framed physical work should be no larger than 36” high x 48” wide. You may submit 3d work, but our floor space is limited.

3. We will select one or more of your submitted works to display in the show.

4. Deadline for submissions:  May 19th.

5. Be at the gallery on May 20th 2012 to help hang the show.

6. When you deliver your work, it must include a removable tag on the back of your work with the Title, Artist's Name, Price, Materials, and contact information including email and phone number.

7. Come to the reception on June 2nd 2012, and invite your friends!

8. All artists are asked to Gallery sit for 5 hrs, if you can't make this obligation, you are welcomed to hire one of our approved gallery sitters to cover your shift.

Galadali Information

I have always had a fascination and admiration for Salvador Dali. This piece is an homage to the surreal artist. Like Dali's classic landscape painting "Metamorphosis of Hitler’s Face into a Moonlit Landscape with Accompaniment" I have crafted this artwork in much the same way. Dali took a cropped photo of Adolf Hitler and rotated it and devised a wonderful landscape painting from it. I have always liked the classic photo of Gala with her arm wrapped around Salvador in a protective manner, and used that as the basis for my artwork. I rotated the image and commenced to making one of my celestial pieces using the contrast of shadows and light in the photo as a guide for the cloud formations. In the final piece you can view many of Dali's trademark symbols throughout the piece. From eyeballs and ants, to the classic melting clocks. There is much more hidden among the clouds, you just have to keep your eyes open and let your mind relax. 
  
Galadali was awarded the Honorable Mention Award at the Capital Hill Art League's "It's a Wonderful World" Show by F. Lennox Campello.

My piece was inspired by an adventure I took as part of an artist's residency program, where at the end of the residency we created a piece of work based on the experience. 

From the very beginning we were treated to a quick tour of the National Portrait Gallery where we saw example's of Manifest Destiny in several classic works. I was absorbed by the grandeur of Albert Bierstadt's "Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California" and knew I had to implement some asthetic of it into my work.

Once we got on the road though, and driving to our unknown destination. I couldn't stop staring out of the windows and viewing the vastness of the stars above. I was mesmorized and knew this would be another integral aspect of my finished piece. 

We finally arrived at our destination where the immensity of the Natural Bridge finally came into scope. My piece was determined to be one of my larger works just in its sheer height. 

The culmination of the adventure came about when we finally saw Frederic Church's "Natural Bridge" and the ideas for my creation began to congeal together. 

My version of the Natural Bridge takes all of the elements mentioned, as well as several ideas and thoughts I had during the trip.

This piece took me almost three weeks to create with over hundred images used, the pathway along the Natural Bridge alone comprised of nearly 100 photographs I used to rid my final piece of all the tourists.

If you look closely you can see many hidden images amongst the shadows and highlights. There are several faces as well, bodies embedded in the piece. There are images hidden in the clouds, in the tree foliage, as well as the leaves in the foreground.

Everything Is Art is a magazine started in early 2011 as a venue for artists and visionaries to share their thoughts, ideas, and emotions with the world. A judgment free vacuum, this magazine aims to exist where biased thinking is non-existent.

Everything Is Art developed around the need to provide a platform for artists to speak their piece. This publication is a vehicle for artists of all walks of life, backgrounds, nationalities, and mediums. Good day! I am Vladimir Dzintra, Latvia’s most important photo blogger and DJ of major radio show, MaximumFunky on the Baltic Sea during summer time. Please call me Vlad.

I am celebrating National Holidays in Latvia, and came to visit America’s Captiol, Washington, DC. I had the good occasion to attend a most unique event on Saturday night, that I read about in Washington Post.  It was name Slideluck Potshow, and I don’t remember seeing such a thing in Riga ever before.  Under same roof, we eat barley and enjoy funny picture show.

We had stormy, windy night when I visited American haunted house on Pennsylvania Avenue, near where the Premier sits.  Inside was many beautiful American girls, many delicious foods made from hand and refreshing beverage from this Brooklyn Brewery.  I heard about such brewery before because my Polish cousin, Krzysztof, is living near there.  He says neighborhood is becoming full of Giggletossers.

In slideshow there was 26 artists from District of Columbia area.  We had so funny pictures from American presidential campaign by TJ Kirkpatrick, familiar pictures of men with strong beard by Christopher McCool,  lovely pictures from Holy Land by Daria Lombroso, interesting pictures from small village in Iowa by Brendan Hoffman, crazy pictures like a dream I had when I visited special mushroom hunters by Russ McIntosh, and fun pictures of men dressing like a woman by Eli Meir Kaplan.

After show, I went to nearby drinking house, the 18th Amendment, and enjoyed more time with my new friends.  After a couple few glasses of potato vodka, I had a contest to see who had strongest legs with one Asian man and one man with beard.  You don’t have to take time to ask me who had strongest leg!

I met nice people, enjoyed very much my time at Hill Center, and hope to see another entertainment such as this – perhaps when I again visit during Fotoweek DC in November.  Next time, I bring my most satisfying grey peas and ham!

Artomatic Site Selection

So this past Saturday I had to wake up bright and early to get to Artomatic. I was one of the lucky few who got through early for registration, and was able to get a low number for choosing my site for the show (#42 to be precise). The week before I had volunteered to prep the building, so I had a good idea of the building before I went in. When I was there for my volunteer shift, I fell in love with the openness of the 10th floor, and the great view of Reagan National Airport and the Potomac. I figured since I was one of the first ones, I would have a greater chance of getting the spots I want. 

I had looked over the site map and determined pretty much where I wanted to be. If you look at the map below you will see there is going to be a bar area in the upper left hand corner of the map. The foot traffic in that area will be pretty high, which will give me a greater opportunity for more people to see my work. Plus it should be far enough away from the stage area to carry on a conversation with someone. 



I was one of the first people to step off the elevator and made a quick bee line to where I wanted to be. But there was already a tag there, so I turned to my next spot, and again another tag. Ugh! How did that happen if I was the first person in that spot?! So I looked at a couple other spots and they had big X's taped them. WTH?! I found out later that volunteers who were working that shift actually got first dibs, and the big X's are for graffiti artists to spray paint on. If I had known that I would have volunteered for that shift. Now I know, for future Artomatic's!

I wanted some spot over in that general area, and finally settled on the wall space below. 


I liked the spot as it is in the area I wanted, I still have my view from the windows, close proximity to the bar, and easy access to the elevators. I don't have any wall space neighbors, but I do have neighbors on the perpendicular walls as well as inside the room my wall has the doorway to.

I already have some great ideas for showcasing my art, including how to hang my banner and setting up a table for the guest book and various promo materials and business cards.

I'm just now, figuring out who the artists are around me:

There is another artist in that room as well, but he had no contact information on his card.
On the wall to the right of my wall, heading to the elevators is Carlos Rodriguez whom I can't seem to find any artwork online for. It's like trying to find John Smith but with a Latino name.
The person who claimed the spot I originally thought I was going to get, next to Carlos' is Charlotte Guthery. I can't seem to pinpoint this artists information either. I found several reviews on her acting career, but not much on her artwork. Oh wait, I just found a blog post showing a couple of pieces from a 2008 Artomatic, and located her Artomatic profile. It appears now she is a photographer.
There will be an instillation artist to the left of my wall space. Veronica Szalus artwork can be found in several places, including WPA and Studio Gallery.

So the show should be pretty diverse and lots of fun! I'm looking forward to setting up my wall and for the show itself!!

Artomatic and Promoting Your Presence

The email came last Monday afternoon:  Artomatic registration was open! The collective excitement and eagerness to register of so many artists was enough to successfully crash the server for more than an entire day.  With 350,000 square feet of space, there’s room for nearly everyone.  And, with registration still open, there’s space for everyone.  Since many of my friends are first-timers and a little unsure of what to do and how to approach it, so I decided to share some of my experience.

This will be my fifth Artomatic and I’m looking forward to the part where I get to see new work and all my friends, meet new ones, and reconnect with artists I haven’t seen since the last Artomatic in 2008.  This is usually when the stress would start, however, I’m taking lessons from the past events to make a list of things to do, things to consider, and ideas for making this one the best yet.  And, most importantly, I’m not taking it too seriously.

Artomatic, like other unjuried open shows, is a great opportunity to debut new work or explore experimental work since the show each artist produces is entirely their own.  It is also a lesson is self-promotion, marketing, design, and networking, all of which can be difficult for less experienced artists as everyone wants to take this wonderful opportunity and turn it into the best effort they can possibly produce, myself included.  

My first participation in 2004 was in a very old building and I had no concept of Artomatic other than that it was a space where I could show my art. Never having been to any of the previous shows, my understanding of the area was about equal to my being able to perform brain surgery.  On myself.  While I knew that we could paint our walls and install lighting, I did not understand how important it was - to make this MY space and to differentiate myself from the other artists around me.  During installation, I did see artists painting and hanging lights and doing other things to create a type of artist community, but I did not do any of this myself (and, I didn’t know anyone).  Honestly, I think I thought that it was a little silly to be doing all this work to a wall that was only going to be there for about 4-5 weeks.

How unbelievably wrong I was.  My little display was so embarrassing to me that I didn’t even take a picture of it.  Not only did I learn a very important lesson in presentation, I learned an even more valuable lesson in what it takes to actually pull off a great solo show.  Every aspect of my exhibit is up to me, alone.  There is no one else to help me create this space for me.  So, I absorbed the work that other artists spent to create their spaces and make them different and unique, their marketing materials, and their connections with the artists with whom they shared the room or hallway or wall, or even others located elsewhere in the building.

I took all of this information and tried to make my space at the next Artomatic, in Crystal City in 2007, a space I could truly be happy to show off.  While there were things I did not do (lighting) and did not plan well enough (business cards and other artist materials), I was happy with my presentation.  I was able to connect with my roommate and make opening night more fun and provide a sitting area and other things that visitors could use to improve their experience.

In 2008 and 2009, the buldings were brand new with rough, open floors without walls or fixtures.  Plywood panels were constructed on each floor and provided the structure on which each artist’s blank canvas was transformed.  I painted, installed lights, and coordinated with the artists around me for events.




One of the most important things I have walked away with was time spent with friends and fellow artists and connections that were made during both of the Artomatic shows I've participated in.  This is my opportunity to show my work.  The effort that I, alone, put forth determines its success - I am my own marketing manager and advertising agency, and you are yours.

Communicate.  One thing to consider when designing your space is to not take it too seriously.  Showing your work is the most important aspect and interacting with visitors who view your space comes in a very close second.  Provide a means to communicate so they can learn more about you, your work, leave feedback, and increase your network, or simply to say hello.  A guest book will help make this possible.  In the past, I've used a small, inexpensive table for the guest book and pen (both were secured to the table with sturdy string) and a holder for business cards (which will need to be refilled fairly regularly throughout the show).  Use social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to let your fans know when you're there and where your work is located.  And, don't forget to invite them.

It may sound obvious, but put your name on the wall!  Freehand it in paint, use a stencil, vinyl lettering - it doesn't really matter - just make it easy for people to see your name.  I've had great success with vinyl letters that are cheap and easy to apply.

Business cards do not have to be expensive or elaborate, or even traditional business cards.  In many cases, I have picked up unique, hand-crafted cards made from a variety of materials including textured papers, postcards, and even photographs.  Anything that will display your name and contact information will work.

Coordinate with those around you for opening night, meet the artist night, and other events.  Plan snacks and other things that will pull the area together, create community, invite visitors in who will hopefully stick around for awhile.  Be prepared to talk about your work and yourself as this will help them relate to you and firm their interest (and, a place in their memory).  Although this may sound intimidating, it is a very important skill to learn.  If you are part of a group of artists, consider displaying a symbol or other type of marking on your space to show community and perhaps a listing of others in the group with their locations (if all members of a group does this, it could really increase traffic to your spaces).

Finally, join the community.  This has been the most rewarding aspect of Artomatic for me and I really do look forward to seeing everyone and meeting new friends.  Are you participating?

We're starting a new series inviting you, our readers, to share your art with us on a given subject.


This is a new series dedicated to your art. It was inspired by the extraordinary response we got when we invited you to share your pictures created using mobile apps. It seems that not only do many of you use mobile phones and tablets as sketch books, but you also enjoy sharing it with us and your fellow readers. We created this gallery displaying just a handful of the works sent to us.

We decided we should have a permanent place where you can share your art, so here it is.

To give the series some direction, each month we will propose a topic or theme which you can interpret however you wish.

As this is a new venture born from your enthusiasm, we would like you to tell us how you'd like this series to run, and help shape it into something you would like to be involved in. MFA - American Landscapes CFA

Del Ray Artisans - CFA - Art on the Edge



Art on the Edge (June 1-24, 2012)
It’s Del Ray Artisans’ own “fringe festival.”  Explore and create “edgy” images, photographs, 3D constructions, or sculpture inspired by your outer creative limits and perhaps drawn from sports, clothes, music, art, performance, food, lifestyle, violent nature, animals, living spaces, dwelling places, steps and stairs, outside, inside, and so on. Let your imagination do the leading!  Where and what are the “edges” in your life experiences that may inform your artwork?  What kinds of edges draw you? Line? Cut paper? Perspectives—those found in Nature, your own home or city? How close do you dare get to a new artistic edge?  How do you interpret “the edge”?  Extend limits and break boundaries.  Go even “beyond the fringe!”  Explore peripheries of the unfamiliar. Venture to the verge of a new reality. Enjoy the views, celebrate the journey!  What artistic adventures await you!  Try new media, genres, themes, subjects, or techniques. Entry details:

  • Receiving begins Sunday, May 27, 6:30-8:30 pm, and continues Monday, May 28, 6:30-8:30 pm. 
  • Please submit your Art RESUME and brief ARTIST STATEMENTS for each piece submitted.
  • Show is open to DRA members and DC-area artists. You can renew your membership at receiving, but it is better to do it before. We welcome our newest artists and our newest members. 
  • Your art must be ready to hang or display, with wire and screw eyes, mounting and/or display stand, framed, matted, or with edges finished. Ask the curators for advice before Art Receiving on May 27 and May 28. See guidelines online at: www.thedelrayartisans.org/shows/artguidelines.html 
  • Artists may submit up to 3 pieces of artwork in any medium. Members are entitled to have at least one work exhibited if criteria are met. Acceptance is at the curators’ discretion. Entry fee is $3 per entry (up to 3 entries) for DRA members; $5 per entry (up to 3 entries) for non-members. Entry fee is non-refundable. 
  • Artists submitting work for display may also submit up to 5 additional matted & shrink-wrapped pieces (original or photo prints) that fit the show’s theme for art-to-go sales. Entry fee is $1 each for up to 5 art-to-go sale items. These works must be no larger than 18”x24” and priced to sell. When art-to-go items sell, the artist may replenish them (no additional entry fee), but must coordinate with the curator. 
  • Art must be priced to sell. When your art sells, you are asked to make a 20% donation (tax deductable) to Del Ray Artisans. Please check the box on the entry form for an automatic donation from artwork sales. 

Accepted Artist Requirements & Fine Print: 

  • Artists are responsible for drop-off/pick-up arrangements and for delivery of sold work.  
  • All artists MUST gallery-sit and/or volunteer with set-up, hanging, opening/closing receptions and/or show take-down.  Please bring your calendars to sign up for duties at receiving. You’ll also be asked to contribute food or beverage for our receptions. 
  • Insurance for artwork and all arrangements for work sold is the responsibility of the artist.  Neither  Del Ray Artisans nor the City of Alexandria can be held liable for any loss or damage. 
  • Permission to photograph any work for DRA publicity purposes is automatically granted by the artist as a requisite for entering the show. 
  • Work must be original (no reproductions) and not previously exhibited in a DRA show.

Artists come from all over the DC metropolitan area—and beyond—to participate in Artomatic’s vibrant month-long celebration of the arts.

Artomatic transforms a vacant building into a center for the arts. Artists and community members connect in neighborhoods throughout the DC metro area through this unique arts showcase.

Visual artists exhibit a wide variety of art: painting, photography, collage, assemblage, found art, ceramics, glass, fiber, mixed media, video, furniture, jewelry, sculpture, installation, and more!

Artomatic is not juried. That is, participation is based on a first-come basis and no one needs to see your art in advance. It’s open to all artists 18 and older.

ArtSpace Herndon: Fine Art Photography Exhibit

Fine Art Photography Competition Exhibit
An exhibition of photographs from the finalists in the 2012 Fine Art Photography Competition.  The opening reception will be held on May 12, 2012 from 7:00pm-9:00pm.

I will have Hands of Time as well as my triptych Deadcandance in this show.

ArtSpace Herndon invited photographers from DC, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia to participate in the 2012 ArtSpace Herndon Fine Art Photography Competition.

The competition was open to fine art photographers aged 18 or older working in any medium (digital or analog, color or monochrome), and using any printing technique - we care about well-done art more than the specific medium, technique or format. Fine Art Photography of any subject was welcome.

Juror:  Mary Louise Ravese
Mary Louise Ravese is founder and owner of Bella Vista Photography in Waterford, VA. She specializes in fine art nature and travel photography from locations across the world. Mary Louise’s fine art photography is in private, university and corporate collections in over 30 states and is exhibited nationally through art shows, galleries and shops. Her images have been used in calendars, magazines, books and websites including various projects with National Geographic maps.  Mary Louise studied photography through the University of California, Berkeley and Santa Cruz extension programs, the Washington School of Photography, and through study with such noted photographers as Barbara Brundege, Mark Citret, and Harold “Doc” Edgerton.  She is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association, the American Society of Picture Professionals, the Equine Photographer’s Network and the Loudoun Arts Council.

Opening reception will be held on May 12, 2012 from 7:00pm-9:00pm.

Call for Entry: Art Uniting People - A Celebration of Creativity and Mental Health

The Anti-Stigma HOPE Campaign is celebrating National Mental Health Month with "Art Uniting People - A Celebration of Creativity and Mental Health," an art exhibition dedicated to making a difference. It provides people whose lives have been affected by mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and substance use disorders the opportunity to use art as a form of expression in order to engage the Alexandria community in a conversation about mental health issues. Calling all artists!
Artists of all ages -- young and old --are invited  to participate.  Artists may enter a diverse range of art pieces including all the different mediums in painting as well as sculpture, drawings, ceramics, photography and writing.  Artists are also invited to share the inspiration behind their art pieces and some of their personal story to help viewers understand their perspective and the impact of mental illness on their lives.

Call for Entry: Zine Submission Boys Be Good



The next Boys Be Good zine will be launched at their next exhibition opening in early June, 2012. They are looking for creative work that can be represented on the printed page, working with the theme of Growth/Decay.  They encourage wide and varied interpretations of the medium and theme.

If you are submitting to the next Boys Be Good Zine specifically, please use the provided image upload and submit up to three works for consideration. The deadline for submissions to the upcoming Boys Be Good zine, to be launched with our next movement and exhibition, is April 20th, 2012. The theme is Growth and Decay. We are looking for any creative work that can be reproduced or represented on the printed page.

ART AFTER DARK: APOCALYPSE



Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States announces an open call for installation, performance, and video-based artworks to be shown at the museum for its annual Art After Dark event on May 24th. Each selection will be awarded a cash prize of $200 and complimentary admission for a friend. This year, Art After Dark's theme will be Apocalypse. The concept of apocalypse is not understood as having the meaning of complete destruction, but rather its original meaning of a "prophetic revelation" as it appears in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Apocalypse is a revealing of something that was hidden from the masses during a time filled with misconception. An apocalypse clears away one era of time in order to allow the birth of a new one. Art After Dark seeks to include projects that promote social, environmental, and cross-cultural awareness. Concepts of rebirth, renewal, or the decay of unsustainable social realities are strongly encouraged.

Eligibility: The call is open to all artists who can be present at the museum in Washington, DC between May 21 and May 23, 2012 to install their artwork.
No travel expenses or shipping will be compensated.

Deadline: April 16, 2012, 5pm.
Entry Fee: N/A


Artists should submit their CV and fill out and submit the submission form along with the following based on the specific type of work:

>Installation: Please provide at least four images of the work, two of the entire work and two details.

CANVAS The Artist Showcase

The essence behind CANVAS is to promote the work of rising artists, and have it seen by a large number of galleries, curators, publishers, ad agencies, art directors, and artist representatives.

Pentimenti Gallery Seeks Proposals




Pentimenti Gallery was founded in 1992 in the heart of Old City. The gallery is interested in content driven contemporary art which challenges traditional materials and aesthetics by emerging to mid-career artists. With a primary focus in two dimensional works, the gallery also features a fresh program, including video, photography, sculpture, and installation.

We work directly with our artists, coordinating exhibitions in the gallery as well as in institutions, and also support public art projects and publications. The artists we represent have exhibited widely in institutions here and internationally.

Pentimenti Gallery is regularly included in critically recognized international art fairs, most recently: Pulse NY and Volta NY.
