23 ACTIONS FOR BIG PROGRESS

Alyson B. Stanfield has compiled a great list for artists.

1. Date everything.
When you file something you have acted on, make a note on what you have done and don’t forget to date it. Ditto for dating your art. Memories fail so easily, and you want to be able to back up any claims with evidence.

2. Plan your day.
Planning your day makes life go much more smoothly. Take the time either first thing in the morning or, as I prefer, the night before, to plan your day. Go over your entire schedule and visualize how smoothly it will all run. Write down the 3-5 things you must do between your errands and appointments.

3. Keep a journal.
Capture your fleeting thoughts before they’re lost forever. Always carry a small notebook or recorder with you to record your brilliant moments. Journaling regularly about art, especially YOUR art, is one of the best exercises to prepare you for marketing. You need words to help you sell your art.
The Relatively Pain-Free Artist Statement helps you journal about your art. Read about it:
http://artbizcoach.com/consulting/statement.html

4. Stop apologizing for the little stuff.
Constantly apologizing for little things calls attention to your mistakes and weaknesses. Think about your last few apologies. Were they necessary? Could you have recognized a mistake differently and played up your strength? Save your meaningful apologies for when you really need them—and you will.

5. Comment on at least five blogs each week.
You’ll be amazed at the friends you can make by commenting on blogs. Not just with the owner of the blog, but with that blog’s visitors. Remember that you want to leave your virtual footprint all over the Internet. Leaving your links in those places makes you hot, hot, hot! (Don’t forget to comment on your own blog, too).

6. Back up your computer files.
There’s nothing sexy about this action, but you’ll kick yourself if you neglect it. Add regular backup reminders to your calendar.

7. Update your mailing list.
Whom did you meet in the last few weeks that you have failed to add to your mailing list? Take time to do that now. If you don’t have time to put them in your database, at least make a list and place the names in your Mailing List file folder to be added later. Never forget that your mailing list is your #1 asset for promoting your art.
I emphasize creating and building mailing lists in my Cultivate Collectors class: http://artbizcoach.com/cc.html

8. Give thanks.
Being grateful for what you have is a sign to the universe that you can accept more into your life.

9. Make art.
Artists make art. They dream about art. They read and talk about art. For the professional artist, Art=Life. This is what you’re competing against. Set aside non-negotiable studio time. If you don’t take yourself seriously, no one else will.

10. Stay on top of your finances.
Ignoring your financial health doesn’t make it any better. Stay up to date with your bookkeeping and take responsibility for your future well-being.

Dual Vistas

This piece was inspired by a poem from Robert Haydon Jones for the Spark website I collaborate on several times through the year. I struggled a little with this piece as I try not to do pieces that are religious, political, etc. Though the poem is not political necessarily, it still has a strong Americana stance to it. I'm not unpatriotic mind you, but the event that was the basis for this poem, has a different meaning for me than most people.

Read below to see the poem that inspired this piece.

Low Moments - Call for Art

Opportunities for Artists

Submit your most embarrassing artwork and art-moments to our upcoming exhibition, Low Moments!
CALL FOR ENTRIES:

Presented by PPW and Outer Space @ Pleasant Plains Workshop
Deadline for Submissions:  October 10, 2012
Notification: October 15, 2012
Delivery of Work:  October 18 -20
Exhibition dates:  October  25– November  18, 2012
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 25, 2012 6:00-8:00pm

DESCRIPTION:
Everyone has an embarrassing art tale (or two)… Like an incredibly hideous piece that you once thought  was your Magnus Opus. Or that time you applied to some residency only to reread your application later and see how it was full of typos and grammatical errors.

Did you ever embarrass yourself while talking to an art dealer or collector? Or damage an artwork at a gallery opening?

We’re looking to showcase a series of disasters in an effort to provide ‘group therapy’ for all artists in the Metropolitan Area. What better way to move on from painful moments than to share them with others and have a laugh? This exhibition is meant to be light-hearted and fun.

We invite you to submit any of the following for possible inclusion in our show:

  • A bad piece of art. Something you hope doesn’t come back to haunt you if you ever become ‘famous’ yet still haven’t thrown away for some reason..
  • School work – enough said. We all know the work we made in art school (especially in the first years) is unrefined, molded by our teachers, and can be super hilarious in retrospect!
  • Rejection  Notices- Don’t you love those carefully crafted love letters? Submit any especially funny, overly soothing, or downright mean ones
  • Embarrassing artist statements (you know you have them! Just look at the bio on your web site!..You know, the one that says you’ve been an artist ever since you were a child scibbling with crayons?)
  • Fails- in general  a piece that could have been awesome but failed technologically, structurally, conceptually…
  • Break-up art
  • Bad Self Portraits
  • Stories! any stories you want to tell can be submitted via email and included in a binder as part of the exhibition. There will also be an opportunity to tell your story at one of our group therapy events throughout the course of the exhibition (dates/locations TBA)

Submit jpegs or documents (for stories, rejection letters and artist statements) and a brief explanation of the work(s)   via email to: pleasantplainsworkshop@gmail.com by midnight on Monday, October 10, 2012

Contact us at the same address with any questions!

The 2013 - 2014 Artist Directory will be published in the spring of 2013, and will be available for sale on the WPA website and at select area retail locations at the price of $9.95.

Each participating artist will be featured on a full page (8½ x ½ inches). The page will include the artist's name, a color digital image of their work, their studio address and phone number, email address, web address, categories to describe their work and studio practice, and their gallery affiliation.

All current WPA members are eligible for publication in the Artist Directory. There is an additional participation fee that includes a copy of the Artist Directory. The registration fee is $75. The final registration deadline is October 12, 2012. No submissions will be accepted after this date.

Epicure Cafe - Call For Artists

Attention ARTISTS --

We're switching out the art on our walls and are looking for paintings, drawings, and collage pieces. Preferably they would be creative and colorful portraits, but we are open to seeing your work. If you or anyone you know is interested in exhibiting their work in a commission-free show, please email cafe.epicure@gmail.com with examples of your work (jpg or website link will work).

About us:
We are a local community cafe, gallery, and music venue in Fairfax. We feature local art and live music as well as showcases, open mics, comedy, poetry, and story-telling. We are open til 2am every night of the week, usually with something unique and enjoyable to offer... aside from tasty food, beer+wine, coffee, etc.

We are now accepting submissions of painting, drawing, and collage for our next exhibit. The opening party is in mid-late June, but we are looking to hang work starting next Sunday. Please reply with examples of your work and a bit about you!

This show is commission free. We don't take a percentage of your work sold. You can hang your work yourself or we will charge $30 to hang it for you.

Submit to Morpheme Magazine

Calling artists, photographers, poets, performers, taggers, writers, etc! Morpheme Magazine is looking for work for its third issue!

Morpheme magazine is a homegrown publication based in Washington D.C. Anything from poetry, photography, painting, prose, or whatever you consider art is welcome!

Please check out previous issues at http://morphememag.org/ and see if you would like to take part! Then submit to morphememag@gmail.com

We are also looking for anyone who wants to be involved with this project in other ways, PR, designing, finances, etc. If you are interested, feel free to write!

Looking forward to seeing your work!

It’s hard to nail down in a few words just what we’re looking for—traditional or experimental, loud or quiet, we like anything that’s good. All work should come via e-mail. Visual artists, send 5-10 images for consideration; poets, send 3-5 poems. Prose writers should send one story or essay at a time. Shorter prose pieces may have better odds with us, though we’d be hard-pressed to turn away anything that we just love. Send your work to:

and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Galaxify Your Name!

This is a fun thing I found over on Gizmodo. With my artwork, I use lots of celestial images, and now I can write my name using galaxies and nebulas!

How to Write Your Own Message in the Night Sky
by Jamie Condliffe

Believe it or not, the picture you're looking at isn't a miraculous string of stars that just happen to spell out the name of this humble blog. In fact, it's an image generated from a huge database of galaxies analyzed by citizen science project Galaxy Zoo.

Launched in 2007, Galaxy Zoo has over 250,000 users who help classify galaxies. As a result, the project has a rich database of galaxy images, all nicely tagged with features. Now, one of the members of the Zoo team, Steven Bamford of the University of Nottingham, UK, has used the image database to generate a galactic font.

Fortunately, anybody can use the tool. Type in your text, and the software matches letters to galaxies before spitting out your message as an image file. What are you waiting for? [Galaxy Zoo via New Scientist]

New Art - Belleza Dentro

Belleza Dentro

I just wrapped up the finishing touches on this piece. I've been working on it for over a month, and like most of my works came from an idea I had in a dream.

The scene I saw was very similar to what you see here, and when I was talking about this beautiful water scene inside of a cave, my girlfriend informed me that it sounded like a cenote (which are predominant in Mexico).

I wanted this to serve as a compliment to my large Natural Beauty piece I did almost a year ago. The title of this piece also is complimentary to it. Since cenote's are found in Mexico, I opted for a Spanish title, Belleza Dentro translated into English is Beauty Within

I enjoyed hiding an assortment of things within this piece. I hope you enjoy trying to find them all!

The Importance of Artistic Consistency

This is a great podcast from Xanadu Gallery owner, Jason Horejs. For reference I have also included the original blogpost after the jump, from his website that originated this discussion.

Click the image above to download the podcast.

This is a large file and may take some time to download, depending on your connection speed. If you are on a Mac and the video doesn't seem to play, you may need to download Flip4Mac (it's free) to be able to watch the video in QuickTime.

Enjoy!

Altered State?2 Call For Art!

There is a new call for art to the Altered State?2 juried show at the Pocono Arts. As you can see on the main poster, my piece Hands of Time won the Curator Honorable Mention Award. I plan to enter again, this past years show had such a wide range of photography in artwork.

The entry forms are after the break.

The WPA Projector

The WPA is a great organization, that I highly recommend any emerging artist in the DMV to become a member of. Below is a sample of what the newsletters looks like.

After the break, you can read more about how the WPA are involved in quite a few things, including posting about shows (some of which you could be in), letting an artist know of various Call for Entries, as well as an offering of informative events.

Enjoy!

James Jean - Inspiration

I recently came across a great series of videos from Fully Booked regarding the artist James Jean. I have been following this artist's career since I first saw the book cover for the comic book Fables. I love the details that goes into each of his works, and the surreal construction of his compositions. I would definitely recommend checking out his work and becoming a fan.

James Jean - "Lost Thing"

The Art and Mind of James Jean
Videos: A five-part series of short films on renowned artist James Jean.

“My design philosophy is, I think, a concentration on aesthetics, on virtuosity, on the sublime, on profanity, and on exploring the whole spectrum of visual communication and dreams,” says James Jean, visual arts virtuoso who gained popularity through his work on the covers of Vertigo’s hugely successful Fables series.

We got to sit down and talk with James during his last visit to Manila to figure out how his art makes its way from mind to canvas. We learned that James is a curious fellow: an unpretentious and unassuming Taiwan-born Asian-American with a penchant for the music of Miles Davis and Gil Evans as well as TV’s Law & Order. He seems every bit an ordinary guy. And yet, his far-reaching relevance in popular culture is evident in his illustrious client list that, aside from DC/Vertigo, includes the likes of Prada, TIME Magazine, Rolling Stone and the The New York Times to name just a few. In Manila, hundreds came for the different art forums and book signings with James, which only confirms the impact of his work.

Learn more about James Jean in our five-part series of short films.

HELD AGAINST OUR WILL  (September – November 2013): In response to the horror of captivity because of political or social problems, uprisings and war, this exhibition will explore and document art that represents the terror of persons who have been kidnapped, captured,  imprisoned, tortured and/or killed because of their religion, race, ethnicity, gender or political viewpoints. The exhibition will coincide with the College’s Holocaust Week of Remembrance in November and will respond to that as well as to other examples of the injustice of  “man versus man” in even more recent times. Please follow the above submission requirements.  Please submit by June 1, 2013 to artgallery@cse.edu and put the title of the show in the subject line of your email.

Art Extravaganza Juried Show

September 15 – October 10, 2012
Reception: Saturday , September 15th 5pm – 8pm

The lone solitary juror has deliberated and has finally decided on 18 artists and their work to be showcased at the Arlington Arts Gallery for the Art Extravaganza show.

...that juror IS ME! :)

I was really impressed with the turn out for this show! The gallery received over 80 submissions, and it was hard to narrow it down. I love the diversity of all the submissions – it is an Art Extravaganza after all!

This is my first time being a juror for an art show, and it was very hard to narrow down the selection of art to a manageable size for the gallery. Not an easy task, I must say, especially with the talent and craftsmanship of the art submitted.

With the multitude of shows I have done over the years, I have received my fair share of rejection letters, and condolences from curators for not accepting my art into a particular show. And though I could not accept every artist and artwork into the show, I feel the pieces that were accepted show a great range of style and technique.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the reception on Saturday, Sept. 15th!

Mutatis Mutandis - New Art

Mutatis Mutandis

The newest piece in the Lyrical Visions series has just been completed! This piece was inspired by local alternative metal band Above The Silence and their song Mutatis Mutandis.

Above the Silence began its journey in 2009, when Chris Rasley and Chris Scott united with the vision to introduce a new sound to metal genre. The band began taking shape when Christopher Inlow joined on vocals. The band came across Amit Muntasir and Benjie Rivera, and only a few jams were enough for all to understand that the band was now complete.

Today Above the Silence, in its full form is playing live shows and writing new music, and has released their first EP online. Find out why critics are raving about the EP at http://abovethesilence.bandcamp.com/

I took the vision for this song from the thought provoking lyrics. There is a constant battle in this day in age, where the greed of building more structures and cities is encroaching on preserving the beauty of nature.

Read the lyrics below, and listen to the song that inspired this piece HERE.
