Art Libs Reception Rescheduled

I recently finished my two pieces of artwork for the upcoming ArtLibs Show. Think of this as 30 DC based artists playing an interactive game of MadLibs with their art.

(adjective) local artists will help (verb) a story through their art. The catch is that the (noun -pl) will not know what the story is. The artists will only receive a type of word to illustrate. The artworks will complete the (noun) with the help of viewer’s interpretations. The (adjective) stories the visitors create will all be included as part of the (noun). In this way the exhibit will continue to (verb) (adverb).

The show runs from June 18 - August 10, 2012.
Reception is Saturday, July 21, 3-5pm.

Thanks to Stephanie Shapiro, who was the first curator to accept my artwork into a group show when I first started. She has been watching my career progress, and believed in me enough to offer my own solo show! I'm super excited!!

The show will be running from July 23rd to August 31st at the Center for Green Urbanism in North East DC.

I finished up my third piece for the Lyrical Visions series, where I create a piece of art based on a local DC/MD/VA musicians song. This piece is inspired by Mariner Project's song "Red" which will be released soon.

Mariner Project is experimental electronic music performed by the duo of Evan Ignatz on keyboards and Mark Pry on drums. I love how their music flows through you and takes you on a journey.

Summer Vacation

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, but SUMMERTIME IS HERE!! I've been enjoying a much needed vacation. I will get back to posting Call For Artists soon, but right now, I'm relaxing.

I am still working on new artwork and will be posting about it here, on my website, and of course on Twitter and FaceBook.

Hillyer Art Space is currently looking for local DC Metro area artists and international artists to submit work for solo shows for the 2013-2014 exhibiition year.

Proposals must include the following materials: 

• Minimum of 5 images with a Maximum of 10 submitted on a disc or by email as a high resolution JPEG* (please save each of the images with their corresponding title--minimum resolution accepted is 1920x1080 pixels)
• A complete checklist of works containing the title, year, medium, and dimension of each work
• Resume including address, email, phone number, education, and any previous exhibitions (with clear indications whether it was solo or group)
• Artist statement or exhibition narrative not to exceed one page
• *Minimum accepted resolution on images is 1920x 1080 pixels.

Submissions Due August 31, 2012 by 6:00pm

Requirements:
DC Metro area artists cannot have had a solo show within the past three years
International artists have no restrictions on exhbition history but must be currently living abroad

Over the weekend I finished up another piece for my Album Artwork series. I am working with local DC/Maryland/Virginia musicians and creating an album cover for a song they send to me.

The selection process for Members' Gallery Exhibits has been refined over the last several years to be as fair, anonymous, and confidential as possible.  Here's how it works:  A panel of jurors (academics and/or working art professionals) is chosen to meet and evaluate the readiness of artists to have a solo or two person show.  At the end of the process each artist will receive an evaluation from the panelists who independently assess the work in terms of composition and mastery of the medium.  This is a selection process with a bonus and a unique opportunity for artistic growth!

As gallery space permits, those artists whose scores reflect a readiness to show will be offered a particular month in 2013. The artist with the highest score will get first pick of the month for their show in 2013. Artists should receive their invitations to exhibit and/or evaluations by September 15, 2012.

The Arts Council seeks entries from artists — working in any medium and residing in Maryland or within a 100-mile radius of Ellicott City — for Art Maryland 2012. Philippa Hughes, Founder and Chief Contrarian of The Pink Line Project, is the juror for this exhibit. Deadline for entries is August 31. See link below for full details.

ENTRIES Artists may submit images of up to three works, one image for each two-dimensional work and up to two images for each three-dimensional work. Images will be projected one at a time through a single projector. Do not submit printed photographs or more than the requested number of images, they will not be viewed.

Entries must be individual files in jpg format on a single CD labeled with the artist’s name. Label each file with the artist’s last name, first initial, and entry number corresponding to the entry form (e.g. SmithJ_1.jpg). Entries should be less than 1MB.

Unless submitting film- or video-based work, video or digital presentations (including PowerPoint)cannot be accepted.

ENTRY FEE A nonrefundable entry fee of $25 is due with this application. Fee is waived for current members of the Howard County Arts Council (HCAC). Individual Artists may join HCAC for $30.

This is my latest commissioned piece. It was originally commissioned by the girlfriend of the recipient as a birthday present. So the first designs had numerous hidden images of the two throughout the piece. I incorporated several elements the recipient had noted he likes in several of my other pieces. BUT THEN, the girlfriend and the recipient broke up. Well instead of just trashing the entire design, I removed many of the elements from the piece that reflected the two when they were together and instead replaced them with brand new images to reflect the recipients new outlook - which is where the title comes from. I have contacted the recipient to see if he is still interested in the piece, and he is! So it's a good thing I didn't scrap the idea!

I have always been a huge fan of Pearl Jam. They have many songs that reach out and invoke many great images, this song in particular I could not stop listening to. I have captured many phrases that appear in the song into the overall composition of the piece. From the path cut by the moon, to the waves and distant shores. This piece can be viewed in three different aspects. First the overall composition that you see when first looking at it, then if you step back you can see the Eddie Vedder's, the lead singer, face. The contour's of his face is enhanced by the shadow shapes surrounding the piece, his eyes are just above the clouds, and his mouth is between the tree and the mountain's. Now look closer at his mouth, that is actually the band performing the song, live in concert. There are other elements hidden throughout the piece that are associated with the band and the song.

ENTRIES FOR THE 2012 COLLECTION ARE BEING ACCEPTED NOW!

Art Buzz, the book, is an annual, full-color, fine quality, large (10" x 10") format, hardcover publication that is scheduled for release in January of each year with a vigorous distribution plan targeted directly to the International Fine Art Community. Truly, this is a beautiful book, not a magazine. Each volume of Art Buzz will be available to order directly from Art Buzz and additional copies will be distributed directly to active art dealers and collectors in the United States and other parts of the world.

Deadline

The deadline for entries is September 30, 2012 (entries in by 6/15/12 discounted).

Eligibility

Open to all visual artists - worldwide - 18 years of age or older. All the various mediums will be accepted such as: painting (oils & acrylics, etc.), drawing, graphic art, photography (includes digital), mixed media, fiber, print making, sculpture, glass, metal, pottery, jewelry, etc. (Sorry, no video art) However, only one medium per entry form but as many images of your work, as you choose to submit, for that medium.

Digital Files on a CD

Digital artwork image files will be accepted on a CD (NO DVDs) and should be readable by a Macintosh computer** and named in conjunction with the actual artwork title. All images should be large – 8" on the long side and high resolution – 300dpi (not 72dpi) – jpeg or tiff file format. All jpegs should be saved at the highest quality. All artwork files should represent your work accurately and honestly. The CD should be clearly labeled with the artist's name and number of images contained on the disc. CD must be accompanied by a printed paper copy of the contents (including images) on the disc and labeled with the artist's name, title of work, medium and dimensions for each artwork. (This printed paper copy is required by the jury.)

Artist Notification

All artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance via EMAIL. (If, for some reason, you do not have an email address, only the winning artists will be notified via US Mail or telephone.)

Entry Fee

The entry fee for up to three (3) digital images is $30.00 (US Dollars) if received before June 15, 2012. The entry fee for three (3) digital images received after June 15, 2012 is $35.00. Artists that wish to enter more than three (3) art pieces may do so but they must include a check, with their submission package, for an additional $5.00 fee for each digital image over three (3). The entry fee can by paid via bank check or money order which must be in US Dollars and payable to Art Buzz. Artists can also choose to pay by credit card through PayPal which is very safe and secure. (three artwork entries included when paying via PayPal) Print out your PayPal transaction receipt to include with your entry submission package and mail to Art Buzz.

OPEN CALL FOR NEW GALLERY ARTISTS

Burne Contemporary’s 2011 exhibition season, we’ve decided, once again, to do something a bit unconventional. We are hosting an international open call to artists.

Just to be clear, we are not doing an open call for a juried group exhibition; we’re looking to sign new artists to our gallery for a two-year exhibition, promotion, and marketing contract with the gallery, and inclusion in the upcoming exhibition and events for the 2012-2014 seasons.

DEADLINE: Monday, July 31, 2012.

Entry Fee: $45.00

ELIGIBILITY
Open to all artists, age 18+, who wish to be considered for a two year representation contract with the gallery. All submitted artwork must be available and for sale.

ENTRY PROCEDURE:
Entries will only be accepted online through CallForEntry.org. Artists should submit 8 images of their most recent artwork, an artist statement (150 word maximum), a CV, and if possible a URL to their website.

Baang + Burne will only be accepting entries submitted through this system. E-mail or paper submissions will not be accepted.

JUDGING:

ABOUT BAANG + BURNE:
Baang + Burne Contemporary is an unconventional art gallery directed by contemporary artists Kesha Bruce and Charlie Grosso. Our gallery aims to challenge the premise of what an art gallery can be. We’re interested in engaging the world at large and presenting work that generates dialogue critically, socially, and culturally.

In the first 16 months of Baang + Burne Contemporary’s existence, we experimented with apartment shows, private “invitation only” events, and 6x6, an art version of a music festival. For 6x6 we presented six exhibitions in six weeks, bringing together unexpected alliances and partnerships from various creative fields outside the art world and from non-profit arts organizations.

Last year's exhibit featured work by over 400 artists from as far afield as Australia and Guyana, and included the work of notable artists such as Yoko Ono and Dottie Attie. This year we hope you will join us in our mission to provide leadership and community to women in the arts by exhibiting your work in Wish You Were Here 11.

All the proceeds of this exhibition help fund our programs, including our Fellowship Program for under represented and emerging women artists.

Each donated card will be labeled and a list of participating artists will be made available to gallery visitors.

All postcards will be priced at $45 including New York State sales tax.

This year all sales will be CASH or CREDIT & CARRY only.

I recently finished my two pieces of artwork for the upcoming ArtLibs Show. Think of this as 30 DC based artists playing an interactive game of MadLibs with their art.

(adjective) local artists will help (verb) a story through their art. The catch is that the (noun -pl) will not know what the story is. The artists will only receive a type of word to illustrate. The artworks will complete the (noun) with the help of viewer’s interpretations. The (adjective) stories the visitors create will all be included as part of the (noun). In this way the exhibit will continue to (verb) (adverb).

The show runs from June 18 - August 10, 2012.
Reception is Saturday, June 30, 3-5pm.

ArtLibs - Artist Profile – Russ McIntosh

I was recently featured on the ArtLibs blog site. Below is the full posting:

Multi award winning artist, Russ McIntosh, has spent over 15 years developing and honing his unique style of digital photography. In the past two years, he has emerged as a hard working and diligent artist. Going from relative obscurity to being featured in magazines and news outlets, his work has graced galleries prominently throughout the east coast as well as select exhibitions in the continental United States, including California and Louisiana. Russ also works hard at helping other emerging artists with his blog, as well as offering tips and advice to those artists just beginning to showcase their work.

Have you ever stared at a cloud and saw shapes and images in them? The essence of my art is for the viewer to look deep within my images to find something much more than what they originally saw upon the initial view of the pieces. The images I have created have many layers in them, and though at first glance the main composition does register with them, it is upon further reflection that the viewer can see “hidden images” that were originally unnoticeable.

The approach I take with my artwork is very distinct, in that I incorporate numerous photographs into a very unique composition. Utilizing anywhere from six to two dozen images or more, I build a piece up. At times when layering the images, other images can be noticed, and I will adjust the highlights and shadows adding some digital paint to make the piece more cohesive. With a vivid imagination I try to present the essence of staring at clouds within my own artwork. If you look at the shadow shapes and highlights within the image, other objects will start to take focus.

Lost Innocence

I just finished the 2nd piece for the upcoming ArtLibs show in Fort Washington, MD. This piece is based on a noun. This piece actually harkens back to my first drawing I remember ever making. My older brother was sitting across from me at the dining room table and he had to draw a picture of where he lived. Well we lived in a two story right next to a bridge and my brother drew this very simple childlike drawing of our house and the bridge and a car driving over it. I wanted to draw something too, but couldn't come up with anything so I drew what my brother was working on. As he worked directly across from me, my picture ended up being a mirror image of his down to the smallest details. My parents were amazed at my prowess and from then on encouraged my artistic abilities. Reflecting back on that picture, I took a warped outlook on trying to recreate that image with this piece. I hope you enjoy it.

This piece and the other DownsideUp will be on display at the Arts/Harmony Hall Regional Center from June 18th to August 10th. I can't wait to see the other finished "words"!

The Billboard Art Project - Salem, Oregon

The Billboard Art Project

Starting Friday, May 25 at 12:00 a.m. and running through Sunday, May 27 at 11:59 p.m. several of my pieces will be on a Giant Digital Billboard in Salem, Oregon!

Beginning at Midnight you can view down, Etheric, Unthought Known, and Comforting Warmth. My artwork will be displayed roughly around the following times: 1:47am, 4:47am, 7:47am, 10:47am, 1:47pm, 4:47pm, 7:47pm, 10:47pm, and then it repeats itself again until Sunday May 27th at 11:59pm.

The Billboard Art Project is taking over roadside digital LED billboards to turn them into free public art venues for 24 hours or more.

Those in-your-face and colorful canvases that you see as you sit stuck in traffic are turned over to local and international artists for a little break from everyday advertising, presenting larger-than-life art in glowing colors.

Catch a glimpse from your car as you drive by, or hang out for awhile and watch the show with other artists and onlookers.

You won't know what is coming next as different artists explore this medium, with the electronic canvas morphing every 6-10 seconds.

What comes to mind when you hear "Hot! Hot! Hot!"?  The surface of the sun, steamy dances, ice melting on the sidewalk…Got an idea yet? Great, because that's what we want for the Hot! Hot! Hot! show in July. (almost) Anything goes, all media welcome and the show is open to all area artists!!

Entry Details:

• This show is open to all area artists.
• Receiving takes place Sunday June 24, 6:30-8:30 pm and Monday June 25, 6:30-8:30 pm.
• Artists may submit up to 2 pieces of artwork.  Entry fee is $5 per piece for members, $8 per piece for non-members.  Please indicate if these works are Not For Sale (NFS) or priced to sell.  
• Artists submitting work for display may also submit up to three additional matted & shrinkwrapped pieces for art-to-go sales.  Entry fee is $5 for up to three take-away sale items.  These works must be no larger than 18”x24” and priced to sell.  When take-away items sell, the artist (at the curators’ discretions) may replenish them at no additional entry fee.
• Limited space for 3-D work due to Special Events – Salsa dancing etc. Contact Curator.
• Your art must be ready to hang or display with wire and screw eyes, mounting and/or display stand, framed, matted, or with edges finished. We cannot show work that is not ready for exhibition. See www.thedelrayartisans.org/shows/artguidelines.html for details.

Accepted Artist Requirements:

• All artists MUST gallery host and/or volunteer with set-up, hanging, opening/closing receptions and/or take down.  Please bring your calendars so you can sign up for duties at receiving.  We’ll ask you to contribute a food or beverage for the opening reception.  These volunteer hours are for entry into this show only and not part of your “required membership volunteer 10 hours”

Just finished my newest piece. This is one of two pieces for the upcoming Art Libs show in Fort Washington, MD. I was asked to create an image based on an adverb. Since I loved doing Mad Libs when I was young, I would always choose the most random words that would make the story more humorous to me. So in keeping with that I chose the word upside-down. I can't wait to see how my "word" plays out in the overall story!

Very interesting article about the DC art's scene. I read this article about a year ago, made some notes and forgot about it. As I was cleaning off my desk, I came across the article again, so I figured I would share it with everyone. You can read the entire article HERE. I've included some excerpts I found interesting below.


Like most cities, artists, gallery owners, critics, curators, collectors and the curious weave a nebulous network to sustain a creative community. Unlike most cities, the DC art scene operates in the shadows of national monuments, free national art museums and internationally recognized art centers. Cities across the U.S. battle against the pervading myth that you can only make it as an artist in a culture-rich metropolis like New York, Los Angeles or Chicago. True, DC has distinct offerings and challenges…but clear indications show that emerging artists don’t settle for DC, they choose DC.


“This city is so supportive of artists , because when you’re here, in this small pond . . . it’s so easy to make your mark…..and once you’re respected in a city, you can take that and brand it outside of that city. So, this is the perfect city to be an emerging artist, I think. If you’re in New York, you’re invisible. If I was in Seattle, I’d be an invisible glass artist. But because this city has so few, if you succeed, you will succeed in more places than just DC because you have the reputation that comes from coming from a regional city” says Tim Tate.

“So, it’s a great business model. This is the best place that I can imagine to be an emerging artist. This town,” he says.


“Artists think there is one moment that will get them known,” continues Tate, “you’ll be in the front page of the Washington Post, they’re going to do a documentary on you, you’re going to be in a museum show . . . whatever it is, nothing catapults you into fame, except for 5,000 baby steps and working hard for years and years.”


Fine artist and native Washingtonian Joseph Holston agrees. “It takes years and years of commitment on the part of an artist to build a solid reputation,” says Holston. To cultivate a following, he advises that artists maintain and nurture their patron base, work consistently to provide them with what they need to spread your name further, and continue to grow – never allowing yourself to become static. “I believe people in Washington respect artists who continue to challenge themselves and whose work never stops evolving,” he says.

This is a very unique work, in that no matter which direction the image is displayed the composition still works. There are numerous elements working together from the clouds, to the water, and finally the stars and celestial aspects. When viewed as is, the stars filter down into the sky and the clouds, but if it is spun 180 the clouds, now appear before a vast ocean the melds into space. When spun in either direction 90 degrees you will notice half of a face gazing back at you.

I was asked to do an open commissioned piece based on the Danzig song "Twist of Cain." The song is very heavy and dark, and I wanted to capture the feel of that in the composition. The lyrics are based on the classic story of Cain and Able. The heavenly light that shines down on the shadowed figure can be eluded to that of the Christian god taking note of the situation. Hidden throughout the composition are various angels and skulls. How many can you find?

I have a lot of artwork that is based on or inspired by music. Hands of Time is one of those songs that reaches deep down within you. There is much going on in this piece, including my interpretations of the lyrics. If you look throughout the composition, there is a plethora of hidden aspects - forms begin to emerge in the clouds, the stars take on new shapes, and within the window pane itself is a whole new world.

Hands of Time won the Curator's Honorable Mention Award for the Altered States Show at PoconoArts in Pennsylvania.

I have always been a huge fan of Pearl Jam. They have many songs that reach out and invoke many great images, this song in particular I could not stop listening to. I have captured many phrases that appear in the song into the overall composition of the piece. From the path cut by the moon, to the waves and distant shores. This piece can be viewed in three different aspects. First the overall composition that you see when first looking at it, then if you step back you can see the Eddie Vedder's, the lead singer, face. The contour's of his face is enhanced by the shadow shapes surrounding the piece, his eyes are just above the clouds, and his mouth is between the tree and the mountain's. Now look closer at his mouth, that is actually the band performing the song, live in concert. There are other elements hidden throughout the piece that are associated with the band and the song.

I was asked by a local heavy metal band to create an album cover for their new album. They wanted a very sacrilegious aspect to the piece, and after tolling away on many concepts I finally settled on a fiery apparition. There is a great optical illusion hidden in the eyes. At certain instances the eyes appear closed, yet if you look at  it from a different perspective the eyes are open. There are many hidden images hidden within the flames, so look closely to find them all.

Every now and then, I am asked to work with a writer to give each other inspiration to create new works. This piece is loosely based on a poem provided to me. I had the idea to use two people lost in themselves and fading away into the city. I particularly like in this piece that your eyes are constantly moving and adjusting to the perspective and the hidden images throughout.

I once had this dream, where I awoke from a deep sleep. Something seemed amiss, so I looked around and felt compelled to go out back and take another glance. There standing on my back porch I saw the most amazing sight. I ran out into the field and there above me were the celestial planets larger than they should be. I was taken aback at the spectacle I was witnessing! This was amazing, even the moon was closer than it should normally be. Suddenly my alarm clock woke up and I awoke to normalcy, but I couldn't get that vision out of my head. I immediately reached for my sketchbook and jotted down everything I could recall. From there I spent many days and weeks trying to bring the dream to life in my artwork. And now, I present to you my MidnightDream.
