CFA - On the Verge

"On the Verge" - At the Lowe House Office Building
Prince George's Delegation Area, Annapolis, MD.

January 11 - April 9, 2013
Presented by the M-NCPPC, Department of Parks of Recreation, Prince George's County, Arts and Cultural Heritage Division

APPLICATION DEADLINE - December 7, 2012
All submissions must be received by 4:00pm
The M-NCPPC, Department of Parks of Recreation, Prince George's County, Arts and Cultural Heritage Division, with support from the Prince George's Arts and Humanities Council, is pleased to announce On the Verge: Extension, Transition, Conversation, this year's exhibition of Prince George's County artists in the Lowe House Office building in Annapolis, during the Maryland General Assembly's Legislative Session for 2013.

Verge is verb, signifying a shift, a switch, and evolution. Verge can also mean modification, expansion, and a substantial moment. This exhibition calls on Prince George's County artists to share their interpretation of what it means to be on the verge. As artists our perception of transition and change vary; is verge a meeting of artistic minds, a collaborative effort? Are you on the verge of a major decision in your studio? Or perhaps verge is an important moment for you conceptually or formally, on the cusp of a breakthrough in a new direction? The meaning of verge may present itself symbolically, through the exploration of boundaries, or literally through juxtapositions in ideas and materials. On the Verge provides an opening to reflect upon the interpretations ofverge, or verging, asking artists to present work related to insightful, prospective and major transitions, as they define it. This exhibition celebrates Prince George's County artists as well as art's ability to represent these shifts and express the experiences that bring us all together.

Medicine / No More Bad Dreams

No More Bad Dreams

Good things come to those who wait! Man, I have been working on this piece since August, and I finally finished it. Whew, I impressed myself! I must give credit to two people for this piece though.

First is Sam Cooper for allowing me to create my vision of the song "Medicine" by his band Sam Cooper and the Sleepwalkers. This is the Fifth piece in the Lyrical Visions album artwork series, where I create a piece of work based off of a local DC/MD/VA musician or bands song they send to me.

I was captivated by the band's music, that my friend Michael Avolio turned me onto, so much so that I reached out to them and asked if they would like to participate in my little project.

Like the other musicians I worked with, they choose the song for me to interpret. And I was thoroughly impressed with the song, that I had multiple ideas going through my head in warp drive!

Which brings me to giving credit to another for this. My muse, Melissa de la Rosa helped me narrow down my ideas to something very similar to what the finished piece looks like. She also helped me look through the plethora of pictures in my database to find just the right image to use as a focal point. (I don't know what I would do without her!)

This song has a sway and swagger to it, that just resonates imagery. Take a listen for yourself, and purchase their EP New Typewriter Moon which contains the song "Medicine."

Musical Visions: Live Music & Art Auction

I am honored to be a part of this benefit auction! I created an original piece of work specifically for this show. I was so glad Bud Wilkinson, an amazing artist and musician in his own right, informed me about this organization.

I hope that many of you can make it to the event! Once, I'm done with my radio show appearance, I will try to stop. THANK YOU!

LOCAL ARTISTS CREATE ART FROM
OLD MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS DONATED TO HFM

At Hungry for Music, our mission is to get instruments into the hands of kids who are eager to learn but can’t afford to buy their own. We collect a lot of donated instruments. Some are lightly used. Some never have produced a note of music. But many have exhausted their usefulness – as musical instruments.

We get asked frequently, “What do you do with the instruments that don’t work anymore?”

What if they could be used for something else? It turns out they can. In fact, it turns out they can be transformed into remarkably striking art. We plan to throw a party with great music, food and drink, and show and sell that art to benefit Hungry for Music. The event will be Nov. 8 at the Gibson Guitar VIP Showroom, 709 G Street NW, Suite 400, in Washington, D.C.

We teamed with local artists Ellyn Weiss and Richard Dana, old friends from our days at the Millennium Arts Studio in Southwest D.C., to find artists to transform old musical instruments into works of art.

Some 20-30 artists will participate. They will create artwork that will be sold in a silent auction that will take place during the event.

Transpose

I love all the hidden images I included in this piece! Also can you find all six guitars, one for each string.

The title is fascinating to me as well. Transpose music (notes, tones, melodies) as well as Transpose what you originally saw in my art, and what you can see when you look deeper.

Enjoy!
