Washington Project for the Arts

This is a great assistance to those of us with limited funds, and the WPA is a great organization to be a part of. Via Lenny Campello's Blog:

An anonymous donor is offering a free 1-year membership to Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) to four local artists in the DC/metro area. To receive further information or submit your request for consideration, please contact Carolina Salvador at poetsdaughter27@gmail.com.

This is a very generous offer. I have been a member of the WPA for decades and the WPA offers its artist-members some very valuable resources; if you are not already a member, I strongly recommend that you join it.

I hope over time this pledge idea will gain traction among members, donors and other supporters so that more and more artists may join WPA at no initial cost.

Hands of Time

New Art - "contemplation"

I was asked to do an "open commissioned" piece utilizing numerous elements often found in Japanese styled artwork and tattoo designs. I loved the challenge and had numerous different visuals I wanted to incorporate into the piece but still retain my unique style.

Though this piece was created for one specific person in mind, it retains an "open commission" status so that others can purchase their own limited edition giclée print or canvas edition of the piece.

Most of my commissioned pieces are "closed commissions" which means there is only one copy of it, and is not available for others to purchase a version of it.

There are instances though, where someone may commission me for a piece, that depending on our arrangement, I will offer it as limited edition giclée print and/or canvas edition.

The Billboard Art Project (so far) for 2012

The Billboard Art Project

The Billboard Art Project is taking over roadside digital LED billboards to turn them into free public art venues for 24 hours or more.

Those in-your-face and colorful canvases that you see as you sit stuck in traffic are turned over to local and international artists for a little break from everyday advertising, presenting larger-than-life art in glowing colors.

Catch a glimpse from your car as you drive by, or hang out for awhile and watch the show with other artists and onlookers.

You won't know what is coming next as different artists explore this medium, with the electronic canvas morphing every 6-10 seconds.

THEME

Artists are encouraged to interpret the figure in the broadest sense to express their understanding of you, me and everybody else.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to all artists over 18 years of age. All media (excluding video).

ENTRY REQUIREMENT DETAILS

Submit up to 3 digital jpg image files on CD at 300 dpi. Name each digital file with the Artist’s name followed by the number 1 to 3 (Example: JohnSmith_1.jpg) corresponding to the information on the entry form below. A $15 fee made out to MOCA DC must be included with the entry materials. Entry materials will not be returned.

CONDITIONS

All accepted work must be ready to hang or display. Maximum size for 2D work 36'' x 40''. 3D work must not exceed 2’ in any direction. Fragile media should be under glass or Plexiglas. All works must be insured against physical damage or loss, from receipt through designated pickup time only.

Unless hand delivered, works without return UPS shipping label clearly displayed on the outside of the package will not be accepted. Name of artist AND work must be clearly labeled on outside of reusable packaging. MOCA DC reserves the right to refuse any piece that is improperly presented or does not accurately reflect the submitted digital image. The gallery takes a 30% commission on all sales.

Artist whose work is chosen for postcard will receive a giclée print of their work and ten postcard invitations.

A New Year and LOTS of Art Receptions!

The year has just begun and I'm already confirmed for FOUR shows so far this year! 2012 looks to be another stellar year for my artwork. I ended last year with over 20 shows under my belt within an eleven month time. I was able to compete twenty new pieces of work, with the year ending in a commissioned piece (Altitude Attitude) and have already started work on a new commissioned piece for the new year!

Torpedo Factory Visiting Artist Program - Summer 2012

Emerging and experienced artists are invited to apply for one, two, or three-month residencies between June 1 and August 31, 2012.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center (www.torpedofactory.org) in Alexandria Virginia is home to more than 140 visual artists working in 82 studios. Artists create in a wide variety of media including painting, fiber, jewelry, ceramics, printmaking, and sculpture. The Torpedo Factory is open to the public every day; visitors are invited and welcomed into studios to watch artists at work, ask questions, and purchase original art – allowing the public an opportunity to share in the excitement and fascination of the creative process.

The Visiting Artist Program is intended as a professional development opportunity for emerging and experienced visual artists, and to expose visitors to exciting artists and projects.

The visiting artists will be working in studios throughout the art center from June through August and will be actively involved in art enrichment events throughout their residency in which they will demonstrate and lecture about their work.

Visiting Artists will be provided with studio space and will be able to display and sell original work.

Finalists will be selected by juror Paula Amt, owner of gallery plan b in Washington DC.

There is no application fee.

The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District is currently accepting applications for the seventh annual Bethesda Painting Awards. Up to nine finalists will be selected to display their work in an exhibition during the month of June at Gallery B in downtown Bethesda, and the top four winners will receive $14,000 in prize monies. Best in Show will be awarded $10,000; Second Place will be honored with $2,000 and Third Place will receive $1,000. Additionally, a “Young Artist” whose birthday is after February 24, 1982 may be awarded $1,000.

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. All original 2-D paintings including oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, encaustic and mixed media will be accepted. The maximum dimensions should not exceed 60 inches in width or 84 inches in height.

No reproductions.

Artwork must have been completed within the last two years and must be available for the duration of the exhibit.

Each artist must submit 5 slides, application and a non-refundable fee of $25. Digital entries will be accepted on DC in JPG, GIF or PNG format.

The Montpelier Arts Center is delighted to offer an opportunity for all artists to exhibit their works during the biennial all hung. All works must be brought to the arts center on January 4 between 10 am and 8 pm. Each person may bring only one piece, which must be framed and matted with hooks and wire suitable for hanging. Artwork may not exceed 35 inches in any direction . There is no hanging fee or commission on the sale of work. Artists must be more than 18 years of age.

Art Fairs Commentary

Lenny Campello recently wrote two great articles about attending Art Fairs such as Art Basel. The first part is here, and the second part is here. Below you can read some highlights I found interesting from both pieces.

The History and Presence

If you are a visual artist or art dealer/gallerist in today’s ever changing visual art world, and you’re not aware or know about the Miami art fairs that take place each year-end and are clustered around Miami and Miami Beach, then you have a problem that needs urgent attention.

Almost a decade ago, the founders and organizers of a European art fair called Art Basel (which of course, takes place in Basel, Switzerland), decided to try an American version of their successful European model and started an art fair in the Miami Beach Convention Center and they called it Art Basel Miami Beach or ABMB for short.

ABMB’s success soon spawned other art fairs, which are called “satellite fairs”, since they all revolve around ABMB’s dates and presence on America’s coolest and most international beach city.

And thus satellite art fairs with names like Scope, Red Dot, Bridge, Pulse, NADA and others began to appear around Miami at the same time as ABMB. Soon, someone came up with the novel idea that these art fairs could also take place in hotel rooms, and the “hotel fair” was born. Many of these also began to appear, none better than the Aqua Art Fair, now called “the best hotel art fair in the world.” Having just done Aqua, I can testify brother, that the Aqua organizers have it down, and in my limited opinion, this is indeed the best hotel art fair in the world.

I am told by Miami journalists from Rumor Control that during that week of the ABMB art fairs, roughly 20% of all the art work sold in the world exchanges hands in Miami.

Furthermore, as the magnitude of the event grew, so did the attendance by both the “need to be seen” crowd and by even more worldwide collectors and, just as importantly, the press.

Thus now the news media not only discusses what’s new or who’s hot in the art world, but also they let us know who Sly Stallone or other Hollywood stars of all magnitude are acquiring. It has become cool for Hollywood stars and wannabes to collect art, which in most Einsteinian dimensions is a good thing.

“I meet more art collectors that week in Miami than the entire year in DC,” related one local art dealer.

“Over the years,” added another, “about 80% of my sales take place at, or because of art fairs in Miami, New York, LA, etc.”

How to get there as an individual artist

If you are a visual artist in 2011 and are not aware of these events, and are not trying to get there (get your artwork there is what I mean), then something really big is missing from your artistic arsenal (unless you’re happy just painting or drawing or photographing or sculpting, etc. and could care less who sees and possibly acquires your work – if that’s the case, then skip the rest of this post and more power to you!).

But, if like some of us, the commodification of your artwork doesn’t bother you, and the fact that when you or your gallery sell one of your pieces, you feel honored and pleased that someone laid out their hard earned cash to simply add one of your creations to their home or collection, then Miami in December should be in your radar.

If you are already represented by a gallery, why not discuss Miami with them? The enormous expenses associated with the art fair scene are the main reason that most art galleries do not consider them. And this is a darn good reason, as most galleries are run by the skin of their teeth and the expense associated with doing an art fair are enormous and could wreck an entire financial plan in less than a week.

But, what does it hurt to bring it up to your gallerist? Who knows where that may lead?

How about if you are a cooperative gallery? Why not consider applying to one of the art fairs and spreading the cost of the booth amongst the exhibiting artists? A word of warning: the better fairs are juried and that means that someone gets always rejected. But the same key that allows cooperatives to survive for decades (spread the expenses) should and must be the key to give them a presence at the art fairs!

And many, many co-ops are routinely showing now at art fairs in Miami, NYC, LA, London, Madrid, etc. The fact that they are returning to the fairs means that they’re having a positive experience there.

There are also hotel fairs. These are fairs that essentially take place in a local hotel, where the room is often emptied out and turned into a temporary gallery by the out of town galleries. The best hotel art fair in the world, according to many, is the Aqua Art Fair, held at the Aqua Hotel in Miami Beach, and having just participated in it, add my name to the list of people who thinks that this is the best hotel art fair on the planet. And at Aqua I saw at least two cooperative galleries…

There are also individual artists-based fairs – after all, with 22-25 art fairs around the area, new models are apt to develop – and they have! The Pool Art Fair is one of these, focusing on unrepresented artists. They had a bit of a drama this year in Miami, as the fair was shut down by Miami police due to "lack of a permit", but this fair has been around for seven years, so I'm sure they'll be back next year with all the right paperwork.

A little Googlin’ of Miami art fairs (or just art fairs in general) will reveal just how many fairs there are and where.

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, Inc. (BOPA) is proud to announce the sixith edition of the Janet & Walter Sondheim Prize.

The prize will award a $25,000 fellowship to a visual artist or visual artist collaborators living and working in the Baltimore region. The prize is in conjunction with the annual Artscape juried exhibition and is produced with our partners, The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).

Approximately six finalists will be selected for the final review for the prize. Their work will be exhibited in the Thalheimer Gallery of The Baltimore Museum of Art. Additionally, an exhibition of the semi-finalists’ work will be shown in the Decker and Meyerhoff galleries of the Maryland Institute College of Art during the Artscape weekend (July 20-22, 2012).

Application Process

The Sondheim Prize will be accepting applications through www.callforentry.org. All submitting artists (whether submitting images, video or a combination) should create an Artists’ profile on this website, upload images (please see below for instructions on submitting time based works) and proceed by applying for the 2012 Sondheim Prize (here you will be able to upload an artist resume) and paying the application fee.

This is a recent commissioned piece I just finished. The main theme for this piece is the highest mountains and the tallest buildings in the world. You can check out the Handy Dandy reference guide below to see which buildings and mountains are used.

This piece was lots of fun to do, because the client is a big fan of my artwork and has several of my pieces in his house. I incorporated several characteristics of the client into the piece, that if you view it long enough you can find them hidden throughout.

Dweller Within

My newest piece is part of the recent Spark 14. It is based on an excerpt from Jewel Beth Davis' forthcoming novel Crisis Becomes You. The chapter I read shows the main character Shekhinah feeling burdened by the human race.

The Shekhinah, the “dweller within," is the Divine that resides within the life of the world, dwelling on earth with the Jewish people and going into exile with them when they are exiled.

You can read the excerpt below.

I included lots of little nuances that are in the story in the piece. Though it works as a whole on its own without knowing the story. For those with a keen eye, you should be able to find the little angel, a chorus line performing Rogers & Hammersteins Flower Drum Song, as well as numerous other little tidbits sprinkled throughout.

Holiday Spirit

It's that time of year!

Sorry, if I haven't been as vocal as I normally am. I had to take a little holiday break.

This year I had over 20 shows!! The months of October and Novemeber I had at least one show a week, sometimes two or more! Things are looking up for me and my artwork!

I love the concept of this website. They offer limited edition prints where a percentage of the sale goes to a worthy cause.

The Working Proof seeks to promote art and social responsibility. Each print is paired with a charity of the artist's choice, to which we are donating 15% of the sale of each print - creating what we believe to be a product with not just aesthetic, but social value. Besides showcasing emerging artists and great artwork, the intent of the Working Proof is to promote a variety of charities and to expose them to new supporters through the appreciation of art and creativity. We release a new print once a week, on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm, EST.

We seek to give our artists full creative control of their work by having them produce and sign the work themselves. Most of our artists create, print (by whatever method they choose - screenprint, letterpress, linocut, giclee, to name a few), sign and number a limited-edition print run that is exclusive to the Working Proof. The details of each print method are listed on the print's info page. Hand signing and numbering is a long-standing tradition for authorship and authenticity that we believe is an integral part of the process of printmaking, for both the artist and collector.

Please keep the following in mind when submitting artwork for review:

- In order to be considered for the Working Proof, the works submitted should be relatively new and must not have been sold elsewhere.

- As the artist, you are responsible for the production of your print edition. We are open to any print medium (lithography, giclee, linocut, screenprinting, letterpress, photography, etc). Digital prints of original works are also acceptable. Please indicate the proposed medium for each artwork submitted below.

If we think that your work is a good fit for the Working Proof, we will contact you and supply you with the particulars of how the Working Proof collaborates with artists. Please do not send hard copies to us. Any unsolicited hard copies will not be returned to artists.

4x6/6x4 Postcard Sized Art, a Legacy Campaign Charity Event Exhibition

The Art Gallery at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado is pleased to issue a Call for Artist participation in an invitational exhibition.

The 4x6/6x4 Postcard Legacy Campaign Exhibit will be an exhibition of original artworks, made and donated by artists from around the world. Each artwork will be postcard sized at 4x6 or 6x4 inches. All of the postcard-sized artworks will be for sale to the public at $20 each to benefit the Legacy Campaign.

We invite artists from around the world to participate by sending artwork that is sized at 4x6 or 6x4 inches, unframed and light enough to be hung with T-pins (gallery walls are carpeted). All artwork submitted must be available for the duration of the show, for sale at the price of $20 each, and will be the property of the Colorado Mesa University Art Department if unsold at the close of the exhibition. All proceeds benefit the Art Department Legacy Campaign at Colorado Mesa University to establish a permanent endowment for the Art Department. This endowment will be established for the purpose of supporting a variety of Art Department programs including visiting artists, exhibitions, equipment purchases and other events that directly support the efforts of the Art Department at Colorado Mesa University to educate their student body.

Studio Visit is a series of juried artist books produced by the publishers of New American Paintings. We are pleased to offer artists an effective venue to introduce their work to a serious national audience of over 2,000 art world professionals including gallerists, curators, and collectors. The publication presents all two- and three- dimensional media. This includes mixed media, painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture. Selected artists will be featured in volumes 15 & 16 of Studio Visit which will be released in the Fall of 2011. Each high quality volume of Studio Visit features approximately 150 artists and those selected will be given one full-color page that includes an image, contact information and a brief artist statement.

Because Studio Visit is sent to its recipients free of charge, accepted artists will be responsible for a $225 production and distribution fee.

• In addition to the purchase awards, one artist from the 2012 exhibition will be invited to have a one-month solo exhibition at CHAW later in 2012. The exhibition will include a printed invitation, an opening reception, a press release, and an artist honorarium.

The Billboard Art Project - Baton Rouge, LA

The Billboard Art Project

This Saturday, November 5th, you can view Several of my pieces on a Giant Digital Billboard in Baton Rouge, LA as well as in New Orleans, LA!!

Beginning at Midnight in Baton Rouge you can view reflection, depth, Woman Reclining, and Perception. To view the times my artwork will be displayed, you can refer to this Handy Time Schedule. My work will be displayed roughly ten times throughout the day.

Also beginning at Midnight in New Orleans you can see Angelic Composition, Divine Vision, Knock On The Sky, and Sisyphean Tableaux. Saturdays and Sundays my pieces will be interspersed throughout the day with other artists, but Monday through Friday during the week of November 7-11 my art will be shown with only a select few artists.

The Billboard Art Project is taking over roadside digital LED billboards to turn them into free public art venues for 24 hours or more.

Those in-your-face and colorful canvases that you see as you sit stuck in traffic are turned over to local and international artists for a little break from everyday advertising, presenting larger-than-life art in glowing colors.

Catch a glimpse from your car as you drive by, or hang out for awhile and watch the show with other artists and onlookers.

You won't know what is coming next as different artists explore this medium, with the electronic canvas morphing every 6-10 seconds.

Show your work in our un-juried exhibit featuring digital art and photography. All entries will be printed (8.5"x11" on heavyweight paper) and shown in our gallery arranged in a grid. Entrants submit JPEG files of original work. Multiple entries are permitted. Separate registration required for each image. Exhibit is limited to space available, early entry is advised.

All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable. Digital video stills and screen shots of web/new media are acceptable. Documentation shots of digital installation and digital sculpture are acceptable.

From my recent Artist's Adventure Residency excursion, I have crafted this beautiful new piece. Utilizing photographs I took from the outing, I spent numerous days tolling over the various shots until I created a seamless scene without any tourists. AND THEN I was able to start working my magic that makes my artwork unique, which still took several more days of crafting.

The finished piece will measure 16" x 36"

The director of the Adventure Program Program, Calder Brannock, will be taking this lovely piece, along with other pieces from our Adventure group, to the annual Art Basel Miami International Art Show. And then in March, just in time for my birthday, we will be showing here in DC at Flashpoint Gallery.
