Gallery West is pleased to announce a call for entries for its 15th annual national juried show. The all media show will be juried by CD, awards to total $1000. It will be juried by Edward J. Reed. REQUIREMENTS

Open to all local or national artists 18+ years. Original fine art in any medium is acceptable. No videos or reproductions. Original 2-D/3D only. Works on paper 24” or larger in the long dimension must be framed behind plexiglas. Clip mounts will not be accepted. Works on canvas may be wrapped around stretchers if painting extends along the sides. Stretchers must be at least 1” deep. Work that is wet will not be accepted. Maximum framed size not to exceed 30” x 40” or 72ui. All two-dimensional works must be ready for hanging with hooks and wire .

ENTRY METHOD

Entry Fee is $35 for up to three works. Additional works, $10 each. Jurying will be from digital images. CD’s must belabeled with artist’s name (last name first), titles, and medium. Digital images should be 72 ppi, RGB jpeg format with maximum 600 pixels in any one dimension. File names should be artist’s last name followed by title. Example: JonesBlueSquares. Acceptance of any digital entry is contingent on seeing the real object.

SALES

All work must be for sale. Gallery West will retain a commission of 40%. Works may not be removed before the end of the exhibition.

Awards totaling $1000, to be determined by the juror.

Our most popular art show is back for its 3rd installment. In June 2010, 62 artists submitted over 600 piece of art–how many babies will we have this year?

All artwork must be done on a 2 inch by 3 inch canvas.

• Each artist must submit a minimum of 5 pieces.
• The registration fee for non-members is $25 and covers up to 25 pieces for submission.
• The online submission form must be received by October 27, 2011–all artwork must be delivered to The Soundry no later than November 1, 2011.
• The opening for the show is Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 7pm-10pm.
• Canvases can be purchased at The Soundry for $2.00 each. ($1.50 each for members) Please call The Soundry to reserve your canvases! (703-698-0088)
• You may also provide your own canvases in any material as long as they measure 2″x3″ and are submitted ready to hang.

Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) Call for Exhibition Proposals, 2013 Season - VA

GRACE (Greater Reston Arts Center) is a non-profit arts center in Northern Virginia dedicated to presenting visual art that illuminates new ideas and promotes dialogue between artists and audience. The exhibition program offers artists from the mid-Atlantic region opportunities to experiment and expand their work in an open, contemporary space. Artists living or working in Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia are invited to submit proposals.

The arts center is now accepting proposals for periods of approximately 4 – 6 weeks from November 2012 through September of 2013.

Six solo artists will be grouped into two Focus Exhibitions, each featuring three artists in separate areas of the gallery. Group exhibition proposals are also welcomed. The DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities (DCCAH) is seeking to purchase two and three-dimensional works of art including, but not limited to, prints, drawings, mixed media compositions, paintings, photographs, ceramics, and moveable sculptures to be included in the Art Bank Collection. We also strongly encourage submissions by video artists and other technological innovators as we look to expand the Art Bank Collection to include more diverse and dynamic forms of contemporary art. Representational, conceptual, and abstract works will be equally considered.

This year, the Art Bank application process will be done entirely online. Please follow dcarts.slideroom.com to find the Art Bank 2011 Call to Artists. In order to access the application, all applicants will first be prompted to create a SlideRoom account, at no cost. Once logged into their new account, each applicant artist will be allowed to submit up to ten labeled images to be considered for acquisition into the Art Bank. All artwork submitted must be available for purchase upon submission and must be created with archival materials. Work shall not exceed 96” in any direction or 100lbs in weight.

In addition to ten images of prospective artwork,

a completed online application will include:

• An artist statement

• A current CV or resume

• An image list of all works submitted, in the order of submission

It's Personal - CHAL Call for Art

The theme or idea for the September show is "It's Personal". (And the Juror is being confirmed so you will receive a notice very soon on this.) Because the emphasis is on personal, please consider explaining how a piece is so personal. For all works selected to be in the show, artists can provide text up to 50 words long that will be included on the wall labels for each piece.

Just like last year, the Receiving will be conducted before Labor Day weekend so that we avoid the holiday weekend.

Receiving: Saturday and Monday August 27th and 29th 9:30-11:30am

The submission fees remain the same as well:

$5 for 1 piece, $8 for 2 pieces, $10 for 3 pieces

Non-members may submit to a juried show - $25 for up to 3 pieces.

Jurying: Tuesday September 6th 9:30-11:30am

Opening Reception: Saturday September 10th 5-7pm with the juror's remarks at 5:30pm

And don't forget - at this show the Wally Szyndler 3D Prize will be awarded. So don't shy away from entering that energetic and wild piece of sculpture that you felt was too personal.

1. Artwork submitted must be based on the theme of the cemetery, any cemetery, and any media. The name and/or location of the cemetery must be listed.

2. Artwork must be suitable for a family setting.

3. Artwork must be original, no copies or kits permitted.

4. Saw-tooth hangers, soiled or poorly matted works, wet canvasses, or damaged frames will not be accepted. Entries must be ready to hang and protected by glass or plexiglass where needed. Three dimensional work must be able to be handled by one person.

5. Works are hung at the risk of the artist; SAG and FCCPA will not be liable for work.

6. Artists are responsible for paying sales taxes. No commission will be taken.

7. The entry fee is $10 per work, 3 for $25, with a limit of three entries per artist. Entries must be received by SEPTEMBER 24, 2011.

This exhibit seeks works of art that use toys and children’s playthings as the inspiration, subject matter, and/or medium with the goal of creating playful, amusing, nostalgic, or poignant commentaries on the role of toys in our lives. We all hold fond memories of special toys that yielded hours of entertainment, and many of us can vividly remember when a treasured toy was lost, broken, stolen, or otherwise retired. For these reasons and more, toys can be a powerful art medium, conjuring up both treasured and difficult memories of childhood, past friendships, and other recollections.

From the utterly outrageous to the sappy and sentimental, this exhibit will include all media, small to large scale. The exhibit will be installed in the Main Gallery of the Arts Building, but a small number of outdoor works will be considered for the Sculpture Garden. Cash awards will be presented.

The exhibit will be up during Garden In Lights, Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Art Center’s award-winning holiday light show. In the spirit of the holiday season, and with the thousands of families in mind who will visit during this festive time, the jury seeks works that are engaging, and fun, and above all, playful!

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay.

The Franklin County Historical Society invites artists to enter their upcoming exhibition,

"My Favorite Things", to be held at the Old Jail, 175 East King Street in Chambersburg, from Sept.11 - Oct 8th, 2011, with an opening reception on Sunday, the 11th from 2-4 pm.

Works may be in any medium, but must be framed, hang-able with wire on the back, and "family friendly". Artists may deliver one work, Thursday or Friday, Sept. 8 & 9, between 10 am & 4 pm; entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Art work should be picked up Tuesday-Friday October 11-14, between 10 and 4.

The "My Favorite Things" exhibit will be held in conjunction with the Historical Society's "Death by Chocolate" event on Sept. 24, which will feature tastings of chocolate, specialty coffee's and tea's, and wine.

New Art! LUMINESCENCE

LUMINESCENCE

I recently created six new pieces that all have the basic feel to them. I wanted a "lighter" series of images, as most of my pieces have a darkness to them. (I mostly work with space images, so it's kind of a given.) Anyways the series started with "Origins of Essence" where I was working with inverted space images and several geometric shapes. It felt good to work in a different style, and so I came up with some thumbnail ideas utilizing other shapes, and maintaining a certain color scheme to the over all pieces. I think the series came out quite nicely. I am offering them in several sizes at a limited quantity. So once they are sold out, they won't be made available again.

ENDEAVOUR WON THIRD PLACE

At the recent HOT reception, I was awarded third place for Endeavour. It was great just to get into the show, but to even place in the top three is a great feeling as well!! I'm "borrowing" this write up from Daily Campello.

The WCP's Kriston Capps has a very interesting article on a new and fresh concept on a DC satellite art fair to the (e)merge art fair - read it here.

When artists Alex Ventura and Victoria Milko host the But Is It Art? fair from Sept. 22 to Sept. 25, they won’t be putting that question to their artists or audience. They know what they’re doing is art. Their DIY fair is asking a pointed question about another art fair taking place over the same weekend: the inaugural (e)merge art fair.

“We can show as strong a contemporary art show without the development,” Ventura says. “I’m not judging, but it’s sort of a friendly ‘fuck you.’ Contemporary art doesn’t need that setting.”

This is a first heard for me - check out their website here. When Art Basel Miami Beach started in Florida less than a decade ago, it was just them (Art Miami had been around for years, but at a different time). The idea proved so good, that now there are 25 satellite art fairs around the ABMB magnet and even the original art fair (Art Miami) changed their schedule to align with ABMB week in December.

“These people have not contacted us,” Conner says, “but I think it’s fantastic.” She says that (e)merge aims to be inclusive and to broadcast other arts events within the city, including, potentially, But Is It Art? “Casting things as mainstream versus alternative—I’m not sure those are the right terms. If like the Armory, if like Art Basel, if what (e)merge is doing is inspiring others, we’re happy that a satellite is happening.”

The other day I found this great letter, from Austin Madison of Pixar, online.

In May of this year, Pixar animator Austin Madison kindly hand-wrote the following open letter to aspiring artists, in a bid to inspire them through times of creative drought. It's a lovely, eloquent letter, and in fact contains advice valuable to people in many a creative field. It was written as a contribution to the Animator Letters Project, an admirable effort by aspiring animator Willie Downs — mentioned on Letters of Note previously — to collate letters of advice for fellow would-be animators, penned by those who have managed to break into the industry. Although only a few letters strong at present, it's a fantastic idea with great potential.

To Whom it May Inspire,

I, like many of you artists out there, constantly shift between two states. The first (and far more preferable of the two) is white-hot, "in the zone" seat-of-the-pants, firing on all cylinders creative mode. This is when you lay your pen down and the ideas pour out like wine from a royal chalice! This happens about 3% of the time.

The other 97% of the time I am in the frustrated, struggling, office-corner-full-of-crumpled-up-paper mode. The important thing is to slog diligently through this quagmire of discouragement and despair. Put on some audio commentary and listen to the stories of professionals who have been making films for decades going through the same slings and arrows of outrageous production problems.

In a word: PERSIST.

PERSIST on telling your story. PERSIST on reaching your audience. PERSIST on staying true to your vision. Remember what Peter Jackson said, "Pain is temporary. Film is forever." And he of all people should know.

So next time you hit writer's block, or your computer crashes and you lose an entire night's work because you didn't hit save (always hit save), just remember: you're never far from that next burst of divine creativity. Work through that 97% of murky abyssmal mediocrity to get to that 3% which everyone will remember you for!

I guarantee you, the art will be well worth the work!

Intertwined arms, self-embracing, reaching across, beyond and back again. A race track - for formula one Ferraris or electric toy cars? A number, defeated, exhausted, collapsed upon the floor? Everything is everything, what is meant to be will be? As seen from the heavens: two people kissing? Ying and yang, before they worked out the summarized symbol? Winding roads and hairpin bends? What does ∞ mean to you?

You are free to interpret this theme in any way that you wish, to speak to or against it, to explore or ignore it.

H.O.W. Journal is an art & literary journal that publishes an eclectic mix of today's prominent writers and artists alongside upcoming talents with an effort to raise money and awareness for the approximately 163 million children throughout the world that have been orphaned. The publication features works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry as well as visual arts.

The subject matter of the work published in H.O.W. Journal is vast and varied: the only common element its quality.

The Six Most Common Mistakes Artists Make When Approaching Galleries

I just received an email from owner of Xanadu Galleries that is very insightful. He offers seminars and such for artists.

Did you know in an average week I may be approached by as many as 20-35 artists looking for gallery representation? Most of them are ineffective. Are you making the same mistakes they are?

Before I explain, let me introduce myself. My name is Jason Horejs. I have owned Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, for more than eight years.

Several years ago, I began to wonder why artists were when inept talking to galleries. I quickly realized most were unsuccessful because there is very little information explaining the best strategies.

Open to all visual artists in all mediums, for works completed in the past 5 years and never before displayed at SICA. Artists may enter as many original pieces for consideration as they wish. Only one digital image can be submitted for each work of art, except for sculpture or installation where 2 views of each submission are allowed. 2-Dimensional works may not exceed 100" in height by 100" in width (excluding the frame) and must be ready for hanging. Three-dimensional works must not exceed 7' in height, nor cover more than 50 square feet of floor area, or weigh more than 300 lbs. Slowart Productions presents: A Show of Heads, a thematic exhibition based on the portrayal and interpretation of the human head. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery, November 3 - 27, 2011 and is open for entry to all artists working in any media. There will also be $2600 in Direct Art Magazine publication awards presented to three artists from the exhibition. ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 72" no wider than 120". Sculptural work must fit through a 36" wide entry door.
