Opportunity for Artists: 1460 Wallmountables

District of Columbia Arts Center

The District of Columbia Arts Center (DCAC) has announced the return of 1460 Wallmountables, DCAC’s annual open exhibition. On Wednesday, July 21 DCAC will open its doors at 3pm, beginning a three-day installation process during which artists can purchase up to four 2' x 2' spaces to hang their work.

Spaces sell on a first-come, first-served basis for $15 per square, with DCAC members receiving one free space and brand new members receiving four spaces for their membership fee of $30. It’s not unusual to see returning participants lined up outside DCAC’s door by 2:30pm, patiently waiting for installation to begin with an eye towards grabbing the gallery’s prime wall space. Work is accepted from a wide range of media created by artists at various stages in their careers. There is no curating; if it fits, it shows.

To sweeten the deal, a $100 “Best Use of Space” prize is presented during the opening reception to the artist who makes the most innovative use of their 2’ x 2’ squares. Since the first Wallmountables in 1990, the exhibition has become a celebrated summer tradition at DCAC. One of the center’s most important fundraising events, the open exhibition runs from July 22–August 28.

General Guidelines

• Each 2' x 2' space is $15 for non-members (maximum 4 spaces)

• DCAC members receive one free space. Additional spaces are available for $10 each (maximum 4 spaces)

• Each piece must be 2' x 2' or smaller. Spaces may not be combined to accommodate larger pieces (larger pieces can be divided and placed in adjacent squares)

• All art must be wall mountable

• No painting or writing directly onto the wall

• No adhesive materials can be used for hanging (i.e.- spraymount, adhesive velcro, 2-sided tape or wallpaper glue)

• Artists must bring their own materials for hanging their work (hammer, nails, screws, wire)

UNIQUE IMAGES PERFECT IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY SETTINGS

Have you ever stared at a cloud and saw shapes and images in them? The essence of my art is for the viewer to look deep within my images to find something much more than what they originally saw upon the initial view of the pieces. The images I have created have many layers in them, and though at first glance the main composition does register with them, it is upon further reflection that the viewer can see “hidden images” that were originally unnoticeable.

The approach I take with my artwork is very distinct, in that I incorporate numerous photographs into a very unique composition. Utilizing anywhere from six to two dozen images or more, I build a piece up. At times when layering the images, other images can be noticed, and I will adjust the highlights and shadows adding some digital paint to make the piece more cohesive. With a vivid imagination I try to present the essence of staring at clouds within my own artwork. If you look at the shadow shapes and highlights within the image, other objects will start to take focus.

Custom Commissioned Artwork is an alternative option you can choose. If you are looking for artwork to complement your designs and color scheme, simply provide us with a color reference and I will make sure the artwork and your color scheme complement one another superbly.

To further enhance the artwork for the client, I can incorporate their own portrait into the finished design. Making their piece even that much more special and unique for them.

Though the artwork displayed here can be reproduced in various sizes, it is available in several printed formats as well. Including a classy museum quality canvas wrap, or as a fine art giclée print suitable for framing.

Artwork will be completed and ready for delivery within 4-6 weeks from date of order confirmation.

The Del Ray Artisans will be celebrating Independence Day and the month of July with artwork inspired by the U.S.A. people, places and/or things. Artists are asked to create artwork with U.S.-made materials so as to emphasize both the origin of the materials and that we represent a large, important purchasing bloc. The goal of this exhibit is to reflect everything that represents the U.S., including the actual artistic materials themselves.

BYTE GALLERY INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONS feature works that are judged and selected by Transylvania University faculty for inclusion in the BYTE Gallery. Professional artists, composers, and dramatists from around the world enter this competition. These exhibits give Transylvania students an exclusive front row seat at the leading edge of international digital art and music scenes.

This inaugural exhibition presents twenty-seven works submitted by professional composers and artists from across the globe, including the United States, China, Greece, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada, Turkey, Colombia, and France. These 27 works were selected from a pool of over 120 entries.

Knock On The Sky by Russ McIntosh

The approach I take with my artwork is very distinct, if you look at the shadow shapes and highlights within the image, other objects will start to take focus. I take inspiration for my art from the surrealists. I'm particularly fascinated by the double images many artist's invoke in their artwork - how you can look at those pieces and always find something new hidden within them.

When I was a child, I often laid on my back and stared up at the clouds and would see shapes and images floating high above me. Often times, complete scenes would unfold in front of me. With a vivid imagination I try to present the same essence within my own artwork.

BYTE GALLERY is an interactive kiosk exhibiting digital art, music, and video works by artists, dramatists, musicians, and other multimedia artists from around the world, as well as works by Transylvania University students and faculty.

VISITORS navigate the gallery using a touch interface, experiencing works through a large display and headphones.

INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONS feature works that are judged and selected by Transylvania University faculty for inclusion in the BYTE Gallery. Professional artists, composers, and dramatists from around the world enter this competition. These exhibits give Transylvania students an exclusive front row seat at the leading edge of international digital art and music scenes.

Join Del Ray Artisans in its 2nd season of monthly outdoor art markets. These markets will give DRA members an opportunity to sell their original handmade art work and provide them with consistent exposure to the community. There will be six (6) monthly markets on the 1st Saturday of the month, from 10 am to 4 pm, rain or shine. The art market will be held on the lawn area of the Del Ray Artisans gallery.

There will be six (6) monthly markets on the 1st Saturday of the month on the following

dates: May 7, June 4, July 2, August 6, September 3 and November 5, 2011. Hours

are from 10 am to 4 pm and the market will be held rain or shine. The art market will be

held on the lawn area of the Del Ray Artisans gallery.

The art space fee is $35 per market or $30 per market if the artist commits to three (3)

or more market days and 10% of each artist’s sales from the market are due to DRA.

Each artist will be assigned a 10’ X 10’ space. Each artist is responsible for providing

their own tent, tables, chairs and displays. Artists who sign up for 3 or more markets

Alexandria West End Art and Wine Festival 2011

Alexandria West End Art and Wine Festival 2011 is October 8-9 along Cameron Station subdivision and Ben Brenman park in Alexandria. The two-day event that will attract juried art vendors from across the country.

The Festival is produced by West End Event Productions, LLC, which envisions a cultural event that showcases Alexandria’s West End. Attendees will sample a variety of ethnic foods at “A Taste of the West End” and enjoy wine while listening to local artists in the Wine Garden.

The festival, sponsored this year by Hadeed Carpet, consists of:

90 juried artists represent all facets of art in Cameron Station

25 quality hand crafter's located in Ben Brenman Park

15 local restaurants represent an ethnic “Taste of the West End”

Wine Garden located in the Gazebo area

CAMPER CONTEMPORARY

Camper Contemporary

Camper Contemporary is a mobile gallery created and curated by Calder Brannock. It is a fully functional art gallery set up inside an altered 1967 Yellowstone camper. Camper Contemporary gallery poses a solution for many problems a gallery faces in the modern art market. It allows the gallerist to showcase work in a clean controlled gallery environment without being tethered to rents or a geographic location. The mobile gallery model allows the gallerist to maintain a physical space where work can be displayed with all the benefits and gravitas of a traditional gallery while easily reaching collectors at art fairs and other large art markets.

The director of the mobile gallery, also offers an adventure residency program. A group of artists journey to a location and spend several days interacting with each other. The artists create specific pieces inspired by the trip, and exhibited in the Camper Contemporary Gallery.

Announcing Spectrum Fantastic Art Live!

Anyone who visits either the Spectrum or Muddy Colors websites knows that we've been diligently planning an event we're calling A Fantastic Art Convergence.

It's time to make it official.

Scheduled for May 18-20, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri, our intent is to create a venue in which the artists take center stage and don't have to compete for space or attention with movie companies, actors, and former centerfolds. This is a show about the Art and about the Artists! Spectrum Fantastic Art Live! will be a weekend festival during which exhibiting artists can sell their work to attendees and where creators can socialize, network, and self-promote. There will be educational opportunities (including workshops, panels, and demonstrations) as well as the chance to meet and interact with art directors from a variety of industries.

We'll also, at long last, be able to present the awards for Spectrum 19 live in front of peers and an appreciative audience at a ceremony Saturday night. Our goal is to grow the public's appreciation for the art and the artists while simultaneously trying to grow the market for fantastic art in all its mediums and incarnations – and to do so without it costing anyone an arm and a leg. The price of exhibiting in a first-class venue is modest, attending the show will be inexpensive, staying and eating will be reasonable, particularly when compared to other shows and conventions.

We'll have special guests of the show (Brom, Phil Hale, Andrew Jones, Iain McCaig, and Mike Mignola) as a reflection of the diversity that Spectrum has always embraced. But each exhibiting artist, each artist in attendance, is equally important: we may be organizing it, we may be signing the contracts for the space and the decorators and security, but this most definitely is YOUR show.

We're in the process of sending out the mailer with initial information about reserving space, but we're giving everyone on the Spectrum mailing list the head-up first. We will be advertising this heavily in the months ahead. We've already received a number of inquiries and with only 200 booths we're pretty sure we'll fill up fast. Join us! Help us make this inaugural event truly memorable.

Awhile back, my good friend and budding author, D. Cullen Nolan asked me to design his company logo. Which I was able to do in my unique style. Notice the phoenix and the tree are two separate elements, but the trunk from the tree forms the body of the phoenix.

I had designed a book cover for his book "Spy in the House of Fitzwalter" some time ago, but I never got around to backing up the original files and my computer crashed sending all the precious artwork, I had created to that point, off into the ethers. Now the book is going to be available for Kindle, iPads, etc. and so I have created a new design for the occasion. As with the first time around I am using Adam Glazer's wonderful illustration as a basis. You can see the original artwork from Adam below.
